Just few more weeks before the next season for anime community begins, let’s take a look at the list of anime that we should add in our watchlist for summer 2020 lineup. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Japan, many anime series and movies from the spring lineup had been postponed or moved to summer, so we can expect that the 2020 summer anime lineupwill be a bloodbath of popular and highly anticipated titles. Although, we can’t tell yet and nothing has been set in stone as of now due to the risk of Covid-19 which affected the anime industries and its production these past few weeks.
While we have to be cautious with the pandemic, let’s also hope that it’ll be over soon and take a look at what the future may bring to us. That future obviously includes the upcoming summer 2020 anime season and we will be happy to share with you our list of anime to watch out for in the next season. We are hoping that this list shall be your guide and will be helpful to you for preparing your anime watchlist for the summer.
In this post, we will divide our list in different sections into – leftover anime from spring lineup, sequels, new anime series, movies including OVA & ONA, and in the last section was the rest of the season’s lineup that we didn’t include in our watchlist yet. Before we proceed, I would like to share here my watchlist from the ongoing spring 2020 season: Seasonal Guide – My Spring 2020Anime Lineup.
THE LEFTOVERS
Let’s start our list with the leftover anime series from the current spring 2020 anime lineup as follows:
Fruits Basket Season 2

The current Fruits Basket Season 2 will continue to air in summer. It is among the most-watched and popular anime of spring lineup and while I noticed that there had been quite a decreased on its animation quality (Idk, maybe TMS Entertainment used up their budget at Dr.Stone last year [pun intended]) but, amazingly, the storytelling is still powerful as ever. As we delve deeper into the Soma family and their curse, Fruits Basket promises more drama and heartfelt stories for everyone.
The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED

Fugou Keiji: Balance: UNLIMITED – Actually this one is listed as part of the spring 2020 anime lineup and aired its first two episodes last April. However, due to the delay in production caused by Covid-19 pandemic, the anime had been halted and rescheduled to be released from the start in July as part of the summer 2020 anime lineup. We had seen its early episodes and it was seriously lit. I remember that its first episode almost broke the internet with its main character Daisuke Kambe trending on Twitter for almost 24 hours. He just redefined the phrase of smoking-hot-deadly-rich detective. Plus, we have another main character beside him who is insanely adorable and upright. The anime will air on July 16, 2020.
Ahiru no Sora
The final cour of Ahiru no Sora is here and it promises the climax of Kurumatani Sora journey of entering a high school basketball tournament. The anime first aired last September 2019 and it even got listed in our Top 40 Anime of 2019 review. It has a fresh take on the sports genre as an anime and although people keep on comparing it with the classic Slam Dunk, Ahiru no Sora obviously stands on its ground as basketball anime. With interest characters in its story, the anime had been a fun and relatable story for many anime fans throughout its run from last year until now.
Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara

Food Wars Season 5 is back after it stopped its release on spring 2020 seasonal lineup. The anime will resumed on July 18, 2020 and will start at its 3rd episode.
Appare-Ranman!

Another anime from spring 2020 lineup is also returning this summer and that is Appare-Ranman! Just like Food Wars, the anime has been postponed last season due to Covid-19 pandemic effect in its production. Now, it’s good to have our bizarre duo back and continue their transcontinental journey together.
ANIME SEQUELS
Here we have the list of anime sequels scheduled to premiere on the summer 2020 season.
Haikyuu!!: To The Top Part 2

The continuation of Karasuno High stint in the national volleyball competition will continue this summer after its introduction from the winter 2020 anime lineup where it ended at 5th spot of our best anime of the season, just behind FGO Babylonia, Smile Down the Runway, ID:Invaded, and My Hero Academia Season 4. Among the highlight of Haikyuu!! To The Top Part 2 that we should look forward to see is the fight between Karasuno High volleyball team against Inarizaki High. For sure, this is going to be an epic one. Production I.G. is back as its animating studio. [UPDATE: Due to Covid-19 pandemic in Japan, Haikyuu Season 4 Part 2 had been postponed, no new updates yet about its rescheduled release.]
Re:Zero –Starting Life in Another World– Season 2

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Season 2 – Originally slated as part of spring 2020 anime lineup, Re:Zero season 2 had been anticipated by fans for over 4 years and now that it’s back, the anime had been rescheduled for release on July as part of summer 2020 anime lineup due to Covid-19 pandemic crisis in Japan. Subaru Natsuki together with Emilia and the rest of the gang is returning this year and promises us another fantastic, dramatic, and psychologically thrilling anime experience. White Fox will be animating Re:Zero season 2. The anime will be release on July 8, 2020.
Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld Part 2

Here’s another anime series from the spring 2020 lineup that has been delayed until summer due to the Covid-19 crisis in Japan. People had been eagerly waiting for Sword Art Online to come back after that fantastic finale that they gave us from Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld Part 1 last December. It even pushed the franchise to be included in our Top 10 Anime of 2019. A-1 Pictures is returning as its studio. The anime will premiere on July 12, 2020.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru Season 3 – Hachiman and the rest of the gang are coming back too for the 3rd season of OreGairu anime adaptation. The anime is originally slated for release last April but also postponed, and now, its latest update revealed the OreGairu Season 3 will air as part of the summer 2020 anime lineup. The anime will premiere on July 10.
No Guns Life Season 2

Juuzu Inui is back together with the rest of the gang in No Guns Life Season 2. The anime had been a fantastic ride for us last fall of 2019. After the delayed production caused by Covid-19 pandemic, it’s great to have the series finally coming back for good. No Guns Life Season 2 will air on July 10, 2020 from Madhouse.
Fire Force Season 2

Enn Enn no Shouboutai:Ni no Shou – After its lit and burning stint last year, Fire Force is coming back this April for its 2nd season. Shinra Kusakabe together with the rest of the 8thDivision of Fire Force and their ally will continue their journey to discover the mystery behind human combustion and the bigger conspiracy that is lurking in the darkness and the mysterious opponent that hinder them – the Evangelist and the White Clads. Fire Force season 2 anime is listed under David Production. Fire Force season will premiere on July 3, 2020.
Baki: The Centennial Tournament Saga

Baki: Dai Raitaisai-hen – We have here one of the best action martial arts anime that we had in recent years, and this time it’s the continuation of the story where we had left from season 1. TMS Entertainment is animating Baki: Dai Raitaisai-hen and it will premiere on June 4, 2020.
NEW ANIME SERIES
Meanwhile, here’s the list of new anime series airing on the summer 2020 lineup which was adapted from different sources including one of the most popular webtoons of all time.
The God of High School

Here comes one of the most anticipated and obviously among the biggest anime of 2020 – it is The God of High School. The upcoming anime had been listed in various genres including action, adventure, comedy, supernatural, sci-fi, fantasy, and martial arts; thus, we can expect an exciting roller coaster with this one. Furthermore, it is among the most popular and beloved webtoon of all time, that alone speaks a lot about its reputation. The God of High Schoolis among the webtoon that had been adapted into anime under the Crunchyroll Originals and had been lined up along with the spring 2020’s Tower of God, and the upcoming Noblesse. MAPPA is the studio working for The God of High School anime adaptation, this means that we can expect amazing animation quality for this one. The God of High School release date is slated on July 6.
It all began as a fighting tournament to seek out for the best fighter among all high school students in Korea. Mori Jin, a Taekwondo specialist, and a high school student, soon learns that there is something much greater beneath the stage of the tournament. [Source: LINE Webtoon]
Rent-A-Girlfriend

Kanojo, Okarishimaru – Another anime project from TMS Entertainment and it the Rent A Girlfriend anime adaptation, which is based on a manga series of the same title. It is a school rom-com anime that I believe everyone will love since the plot seems pretty common but it’s the kind of story that most of the anime fans out there will buy. I mean, the plot seems simple but will surprise us at the same time. The anime will be release on July 11.
In Japan, the lonely have a new way out — online services that rent out dads, children, even girlfriends! When Kazuya’s true love dumps him, he’s just desperate enough to try it, and he’s shocked at how cute and sweet his rental girlfriend turns out to be. But she wants to keep their “relationship” a secret, and there’s a complication… she goes to his university… and their grandmothers are in the same home… and they live next door to each other?! And Kazuya finds out she’s not nearly as nice in “real life”… [Source: MU]
Higurashi: When They Cry (2020)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2020) – Here’s a remake of one of the most popular horror anime of all time, Higurashi: When They Cry. For people who had seen the anime several years ago, this is another opportunity to witness the bloodbath and experience the psychological-thrill it brought to us in a new light. While I think the first anime had ended decently, and I don’t know if a reboot is necessary but I do believe that it could’ve been better, so let’s hope that Higurashi (2020) version will surpass its predecessor. Passione will be animating the project. [Update: The anime had been postponed, new release date wasn’t announce yet.]

Great Pretender

Alright, here’s one of the anime that I’ve been patiently waiting because I felt like it reminded me of my personal favorite Banana Fish at some point. The Great Pretender anime story seems pretty interesting and exciting, plus it’s animated by WIT studio that we can expect for great animation quality. I just wish that the characters would be interesting enough to fuel the amazing premise of its plot. The anime had premiered last June 2, 2020.
Masato Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…! [Source: official website; emended]
Deca-Dence

We have an original anime here from animation studio NUT. While the title itself doesn’t quite pack any impact, other than it sounds decadent – however, the plot seems pretty catchy and it’s been a while since the last time we had an interesting post-apocalyptic sci-fi anime, so I will surely grab on this one and add it in my watchlist. Deca Dence anime will be release on July 8.
An impactful science-fiction action epic, the story of DECA-DENCE takes place in a technologically advanced future, with giant city-like structures that dominate a ravaged landscape. [Source: Otaquest]
Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time

Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan – While I am not really fond of its plot yet, I still think that Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time hold some promise and I’ll settle with that belief until it officially premieres on July. Meanwhile, for people who love comedy, ecchi, fantasy-harem stuff, this anime is definitely a cup of tea for you. The anime will air on July 11.
The story centers on the titular protagonist, the adventurer Peter Grill, the “strongest man in the world.” While he has a girlfriend named Luvilia who he sworn to spend the rest of his life with, Luvilia still believes that babies are delivered by storks, and in the two years since their relationship began, Peter and Luvilia has not progressed beyond holding hands. In the meantime, various other women, such as two ogre twins and an elf, all want him so that they can bear strong children. Peter has to avoid all manner of temptation and plots, all while feeling guilty toward Luvilia. [Source: Anime News Network]
The Misfit of Demon King Academy

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha – With a pretty generic plot and story, people may actually sleep with this one. However, it does have the common formula which has been highly accepted by the anime community despite how ordinary the story could be. Reading the plot reminds me of The Daily Life of Immortal King – a Chinese donghua that aired last January. The Misfit of Demon King Academy somehow promises a hilarious and fun adventure, and I am seriously fine with it since Silver Link is animating the anime – the same studio that gave us the BOFURI which has been a surprisingly good anime from winter 2020 lineup. The anime will premiere on July 4.
Anoth, the Demon King of Tyranny, has defeated humans, spirits, and gods alike. But even demon kings get tired of all the fighting sometimes! Hoping for a more peaceful life, Anoth decides to reincarnate himself. When he wakes two thousand years later, though, he finds the world has become too peaceful–his descendants have grown weak and magic is in serious decline. Intending to reclaim his rightful place, he enrolls in Demon King Academy, where he finds that his magical power is off the charts. Literally. And because they can’t measure his power, the faculty and other students regard Anoth as a misfit. We have another original anime here and this time it is from studio l-a unch BOX, which offers an action-adventure premise in another dystopian scenario set in Tokyo. If you had seen Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, then this one may look familiar to you, however, it seems like that there’s a sci-fi aspect on its story as the plot presents a time-travel setup.
In 2030, Japan. A virus has infected humans throughout the world. Infected people turn into different forms of monsters based on their age, sex, and race. The virus is named ‘Gibia’ – after being rich in variety like gibia. Just then, a pair of samurai and ninja appeared in such a blighted wasteland of Japan. They both traveled from the early Edo period, fighting together with help from a doctor who tries to find cure for Gibia. Facing ceaseless attacks from Gibias, and outlaws that attack travelers for food, they start the dangerous journey with enemies all around.
Akudama Drive
Here’s an original anime from Studio Pierrot and tells us an interesting action sci-fi story when war broke out in Japan, and it has been divided. While I am not fully buying this story yet, I think I have to keep an eye on this one too.
Long ago, a war broke out in Japan that pitted Kantou against Kansai and divided the country. Kansai became dependent on Kantou, but slowly the police and government began losing control of Kansai to criminals known as Akudama. [Source: MAL News]
Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation Season 2

Muhyo to Roujii no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho Season 2 – Here we have the 2nd season of 2018 action mystery comedy anime Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation which actually reminded me of Ghost Hunt. A fun and hilarious ride await us with this anime’s return as it will once again bring forth magic, action, comedy, and some terror. Studio DEEN will handle this project.
Are you a victim of unwanted spirit possession? Is there a ghost you need sent up and away…or down to burn for all eternity? If the answer is yes, then you need Muhyo and Roji, experts in magic law. Serving justice to evil spirits is their specialty.
