spring 2020 anime

The winter 2020 season for anime lovers is almost over and with April coming up next week; it’s about time to take a look at the spring 2020 anime list. Yes, the upcoming season is one that I am excited to come so soon because I have plenty of personal favorites there. Although before we proceed with our discussion on which anime should we add in our watchlist, I would like to take this moment to share my thoughts about the concluding winter 2020 season – it’s hilariously fun, strong and pretty amazing season for me. While, there are only few that truly caught my attention, almost every show did a good job especially the leftover from 2019 such as Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front –Babylonia, My Hero Academia Season 4, Chihayafuru 3, and Ahiru no Sora. Furthermore, Smile Down the Runway, Haikyuu!! To The Top, Somali & the Forest Spirit, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, and ID:Invaded were among the most fabulous new anime this 2020.

Now, as we are heading to spring 2020 seasonal lineup I will once again divide this post into 4 parts – the leftover shows & sequels, new anime, movies and those that I won’t add in my watchlist yet.

Let’s start our look at all the anime series airing this April with the leftover from the previous season and the returning anime sequels this 2020.

I. Leftover & Sequels this Spring 2020 Season

Leftover & Sequels this Spring 2020 Season

A Certain Scientific Railgun T

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T – Yes, the 3rd season of A Certain Scientific Railgun continues its stint from winter 2020 anime lineup this spring and to be honest, it is quite late compared to its peer from the previous season due to several delays on its production caused by COVID-19 in Japan. Nonetheless, I have this anime on top on my watchlist for leftover shows since I really like Misaka, and I just can’t wait how her team of beautiful will yet fierce female espers will overcome this new hurdles they’re facing. I am even more excited as she will join force with fifth-ranked level 5 esper in Academy City who is also her rival.

Plunderer

I have mixed opinions towards this one as the plot twists is quite heavy for my heart and brain to handle that sometimes, it rose so high in my weekly ranking then later on fell on rock-bottom. The reason I still have here in my watchlist is the fact that I am simply looking forward to see more from it, while the humor and fanservice doesn’t amazed me, the fight scenes were really good.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2

Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai? Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen – After its hilarious and romantic stint last year, Kaguya-sama is back together with the rest of the gang from the anime that really gave us a good time in 2019. Despite the romance aspect of the anime, I think that its biggest asset is all the humor embedded in it with every character having those lovable and obnoxious personalities that we could all relate with in one way or another. Kaguya-sama Love is War season 2 release date is slated on April 11, 2020 and is animated by A-1 Pictures.

Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld Part 2

Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld Part 2

Kirito is back and will finally awaken from long deep slumber this spring. He will join the action together with Asuna, Leafa, and Shinon as they embark on Great War against Dark God Vecta to save Alice and the denizens of Underworld. The previous season had been an amazing ride and even finished at our 6th place in our list of top anime of 2019, thus I am quite hyped and expecting so much from this upcoming anime sequel. Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of the Underworld Part 2 release date is scheduled on April 26, 2020 and still having A-1 Pictures as its animating studio. [Update: Sword Art Online III – War of the Underworld Part 2 had been postponed due to Covid-19 concern in Japan]

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan – It’s Oregairu, and after several years Hachiman is back to continue the funny and dramatic love story that we all loved.  As one of the most popular anime from the previous decade, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU 3rd season is definitely among the most anticipated anime of 2020. Oregairu season 3 release dateis scheduled on April 10, 2020 with studio feelanimating it. [Update: Due to CoVid-19 issues in Japan, Oregairu season 3 had been postponed with its 2nd season taking over it’s alloted time slot]

Food Wars Season 5

Food Wars Season 5

Shokugeki no Souma: Gou no Sara – Soma is coming back this spring and now that he’s the leader of the Elite 10, we just can’t wait to see what he will do next. Are we up for another fascinating shokugeki, new dishes which will take our breath and clothes away? Well, we better find that out when Food Wars return on April 11, 2020 from J.C. Staff. [Update: Food Wars Season 5 succeeding episodes after April 17 had been delayed due to Covid-19 concern in Japan]

Fruits Basket (2019) Season 2

Fruits Basket (2019) Season 2

Tohru, Yuki, Koh and almost everyone from the Soma Family and Tohru’s friends are coming back for the 2nd season of the 2019 reboot of Fruits Basket which is one of the most dramatic anime rides of 2019. TMS Entertainment is coming back as its animating studio. Fruits Basket Season 2 is due for release on April 7, 2020. I am seriously excited for this as we delve deeper into the world of the Soma family and the curse that bind them for many generations. I can’t wait to see how impactful Tohru’s presence to everyone and she will bring a new light to their life.

Ahiru no Sora

Sora and the rest of the Basketball club will continue their story this spring and as they enter the inter-high competition, how well will they do is our biggest question. We all know that their team have talents but it takes more than that to achieve victory. I just can’t wait to see what more of an inspiring story they will gave us next.

Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 2

Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 2

Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen 2nd season – Main, Lutz and the whole gang is coming back to continue our young lady’s journey here in her new fantasy world as she fought the deadly disease Devouring while also striving to achieve her goal of making a book. Ajia-do is returning as the animating studio for Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 2 which is slated to return on April 5, 2020.

No Guns Life Season 2

A unique anime that I had truly enjoyed from fall 2019 anime lineup, No Guns Life is returning this April 10, 2020 from MadHouse. While I am not expecting too much from it, I just wish that we could have an even more exciting storyline this time and non-stop action from our guy with a revolver for a head. [Update: No Guns Life Season had been delayed due to Covid-19 concerns]

Kingdom Season 3

Kingdom Season 3

This anime is bloody hell and the excitement is simply high ever since Kingdom had been announced to return for its 3rdseason. This action historical anime will surely bring great fight scenes in the spring 2020 anime lineup with solid animation and good drama. Kingdom Season 3 release date is set on April 6, 2020 and will be animated by St.Signpost.

II. New anime series releasing this spring 2020

New anime series releasing this spring 2020

Next, we have here the list of new anime series that I have in my watchlist as follows:

Kami no Tou: Tower of God

Kami no Tou: Tower of God

The most anticipated anime adaptation of 2020 is here and it’s no other than the popular webtoon from Korea Tower of God which is listed as part of Crunchyroll original and will be animated by Telecom Animation Film. The anime sits atop my watchlist for new anime series for spring 2020 and I just couldn’t wait to see it as soon as possible. Tower of God anime adaptation will be release on April 2, 2020.

Reach the top, and everything will be yours. At the top of the tower exists everything in this world, and all of it can be yours. You can become a god. This is the story of the beginning and the end of Rachel, the girl who climbed the tower so she could see the stars, and Bam, the boy who needed nothing but her. (Source: Crunchyroll)

Gleipnir

What we have here is an action mystery supernatural anime from Pine Jam. Gleipnir have that spooky appeal in it and I just can’t wait to see what kind of secrets is hidden in its story. . The anime will premiere on April 5, 2020.

Shuichi Kagaya is an ordinary high school kid in a boring little town. But when a beautiful classmate is caught in a warehouse fire, he discovers a mysterious power, he can transform into a furry dog with an oversized revolver and a zipper down his back. He saves the girl’s life, sharing his secret with her. But she’s searching for the sister who killed her family, and she doesn’t care how degrading it gets; she will use Shuichi to accomplish her mission.

The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?

The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?

Hach-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! – Let me be direct, this is another isekai. Yes, it’s an isekai and upon reading the synopsis I could feel the Ascendance of a Bookworm, and High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World scenario here. These two anime are the first that comes into my mind but I felt like I could give this anime a go since I do believe it could offer something new and a fun ride too. The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?anime will be release on April 2, 2020 and is animated by Shin-Ei Animation & SynergySP.

Ichinomiya Shingo, a 25-year old man working at a firm company, while thinking of tomorrow’s busy working day, goes to sleep. However, when he woke up, he found himself in a room unknown to him and realized that he is inside a 6-years-old body, taking over his body and mind. He soon learns from the memories of the boy that the boy was born as the youngest child of a poor noble family living in a back country. Having no administrative skill, he can’t do anything to manage the vast land his family has. Fortunately, he is blessed with a very rare talent, the talent of magic. Unfortunately, while his talent could bring prosperity to his family, in his situation it only brought disaster. This is the story of the boy, Wendelin Von Benno Bauemeister, opening his path in a harsh world.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite Shimatta – Here we have another isekai and I think I’ll definitely fall in love with this one as long as it is properly written and executed. I mean the plot is pretty unique despite being an isekai anime, so I might actually grab this one because I could feel that this is going to be a hilarious ride throughout the season. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! will premiere on April 5, 2020 from Silver Link.

After hitting her head particularly hard one day, Duke Claes’ daughter, Katarina, suddenly recalls all the memories of her past life: that of a teenage Japanese girl. Just before her untimely death, this girl recalls playing an otome game… that is exactly like the world she’s living in now! She is now Katarina Claes, the antagonist of the otome game, who nastily hounded the protagonist until the end. Knowing all the possible outcome of the game, she realizes that every single possible routes ends with Katarina being murdered or exiled! In order to avoid these Catastrophic Bad Ends, she has to use her knowledge of the game and her own wiles, starting with breaking off this engagement with the prince. Will Katarina survive while making her way through this world, where bad flags trip at every turn? Find out in this reverse-harem rom-com, led by everybody’s favorite villainess! BNA

Brand New Animal – At first glance, Beastars is the first anime that comes into my head but taking a deeper look to its plot, this sounds a little bit darker than just dealing with the food chain. BNA is the new anime project from Trigger, the studio that gave us the infectious Promare and Kiznaiver – so I am definitely expecting great animation from this plus vivid color dynamics. BNA release date is slated on April 9, 2020.

In the 21st century, the existence of animal-humans came to light after being hidden in the darkness of history. Michiru lived life as a normal human, until one day she suddenly turns into a tanuki-human. She runs away and takes refuge in a special city called Anima City that was set up 10 years ago for anime-humans to be able to live as themselves. There Michiru meets Shiro, a wolf-human who hates humans. Through Shirou, Michirou starts to learn about the worries, lifestyle, and joys of the animal-humans. As Michiru and Shirou try to learn why Michiru suddenly turned into an animal-human, they unexpectedly get wrapped up in a large incident. (Source: Anime News Network)

Kakushigoto

Kakushigoto anime

Here we have a personal favorite of mine, Kakushigoto is an interesting take on a father and daughter relationship although this topic had been exploit so many times in anime. I could feel the Barakamon vibes just by looking at it, with the twist like Ao-chan Can’t Study. However, this one is a mild slice-of-life comedy anime that I could adore anytime of the day. Kakushigoto release date is on April 2, 2020 and another work this spring 2020 season from Ajia-do.

The story follows a lonely mangaka, Kakushi Goto, who draws vulgar manga. The twist? Well, he has to hide the fact that this is his work so that his young daughter, Hime, isn’t exposed to its mature content. This slice-of-life comedy will explore the relationship between father and daughter, and the plight of an adult manga creator. (Source: Funimation)

Sing “Yesterday” For Me

Sing “Yesterday” For Me

Yesterday wo Utatte – This one had been sitting comfortably atop of my watchlist for spring 2020 anime season because this is definitely my cup of tea. The anime is a project by Doga Kobo and will be release on April 5, 2020.

The coming-of-age story follows a university graduate named Rikuo who has not been able to find permanent employment after college, a mysterious woman named Haru who has a pet crow, and Rikuo’s former university classmate Shinako. (Source: Anime News Network)

Appare-Ranman!

Appare-Ranman!

Historical-adventure anime, ah this might be the reason why I am anxiously excited for Appare-Ranman!This new original anime series will be an exciting and innovative adventure throughout the wilderness of America and I am simply looking forward how the outrageous pair of incompatible people battles their fate. Appare-Ranman! is the next project of P.A. Works after their work on Fairy Gone from last year and it’s slated for release on April 10, 2020.

The story is set at the end of the 19thcentury and one the eve of the next one. After a certain mishap, the brilliant but socially inept engineer Sorano Appare (family name first)and the shrewd but cowardly samurai Isshiki Kosame find themselves drifting on a boat from Japan to America. Broke, the two decide to compete in the Trans-America Wild Race to win the prize and return to Japan. The two battle crazy rivals, outlaws and the great outdoors itself as they race through the wild West from the starting line in Los Angeles to the finish line in New York – in the steam powered car they built.

Arte

Arte anime

This anime is a story of a woman’s love for her craft. Arte is a historical seinen anime that tackles about a story where society dictates the people’s actions and dreams based on their gender. Here we have an enlightened woman who is definitely way ahead of her times and this is story that I could fall for over and over again. Arte release date is on April 4, 2020 and it’s one of the most anticipated anime series this spring. It’s a project from Seven Arcs.

Arte was born into an aristocratic family in Florence during the 16th century Renaissance era. Being female, it was unheard of for one to become an artist. Driven by her love of art, Arte is willing to cast aside her aristocratic lifestyle to become an artist.

Listeners

Listeners

Imagine a world without music, that would be a living hell for sure and such is the premise of this new original upcoming anime from studio MAPPA. Listeners will set to change the world through music and I have to see this. This could be the next Carole & Tuesday or might be even better and since MAPPA is animating it, we could definitely expect for a high quality animation for this which will further intensifies its radiance. Listeners anime series release date is scheduled on April 4, 2020.

The “great adolescent symphony” is set in a world where nothing called “music” exists. A boy meets Myuu, a mysterious girl with an empty audio input jack on her body. When she is plugged into an amp, something that will change the world is set in motion …. “Thus begins a journey of sound that will never be forgotten.” [Source: Anime News Network]

Fugou Keiji: Balance: Unlimited

The premise of this anime didn’t caught me yet but I am simply adding it here since it’s a work from CloverWorks which previously gave me The Promised Neverland (my best anime of 2019), and the epic Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front – Babylonia which has been a legendary anime experience so far. Fugou Keiji anime will premiere on April 10, 2020.

The story follows detective Daisuke Kambe and partner Haru Kato as they work on cases at the Modern Crime Prevention Headquarters–where only people who’ve caused problems for the police end up. Daisuke is a bit materialistic, using his vast wealth to solve crimes, becoming ever-detached to the human element of it all. Kato, on the other hand, believes money isn’t everything, and is repulsed by Daisuke’s lack of compassion. These two investigators will have to overcome their stark differences if they’re going to solve the mysteries ahead of them! [Source: Funimation]

Wave, Listen to Me!

Nami yo Kiite Kure – Alright guys, we have here a radio drama spilling comedy, drama and romance in our spring 2020 anime watchlist. Wave, Listen to Me! is an anime project from Sunrise and slated for release on April 4, 2020. Seriously, I have high hopes for this because I felt this could be one hell of ride.

The stage is Sapporo, Hokkaido. One night, our heroine, Minare Koda, spills her heartbroken woes to a radio station worker she meets while out drinking one night. The next day, she hears a recording of her pitiful grumbling being played live over the air. Minare storms into the station in a rage, only to then be duped by the station director into doing an impromptu talk show explaining her harsh dialogue. With just one recording, the many eccentric facets of Minare’s life begin to pull every which direction as she falls ever deeper into the world of radio. [Source: Kodansha Comics]

Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma

This is not Bungou Stray Dogs guys, but we’ll definitely meet famous Japanese historical writers here just like the namesake of the characters from the former. This is an action fantasy anime that reminds me of some classic anime. While the plot is pretty generic, I think this is going to be a fun ride. This anime is made by OLM and will premiere on April 4, 2020.

You are in a world where you can meet famous Japanese historical writers. With a party composed of other writers, you delve into tainted books to purify them, unlock secrets, and gain new allies. [Source: MyAnimeList News]

Woodpecker Detective’s Office

Woodpecker Detective’s Office anime

Kitsutsuki Tantei-Dokoro – We’re up for another detective’s story next season which seems to be visually awesome and criminally interesting. Woodpecker Detective’s Office release date is on April 13, 2020 from Liden Films.

It is the end of the Meiji Era. The genius poet Ishikawa Takuboku, who’s struggling financially, starts a detective business out of his lodging in response to a certain murder case. He calls it the Woodpecker Detective’s Office. “The ghosts of the Twelve-Story Tower in Asakusa,” “the man-eating figure who wanders the streets on snowy nights”… Takuboku involves himself in one bizarre case after another with his hometown acquaintance, Kindaichi Kyosuke, as his assistant. Other literary men such as Nomura Kodo, Yoshii Isamu, Hagiwara Sakutaro, and Wakayama Bokusui are also dragged into Takuboku’s exploits as he races all around Tokyo at the height of Westernization! [Source: Crunchyroll]
