With the rise of Chinese animation and many of us getting exposed to it, it has been a norm to commonly check various donghua and discover more series that share similar antics and plot to it. For today’s feature of our top 10 donghua recommendations, we will have Against the Sky Supreme and list down what are the donghua or anime that are similar to it.
But first, let’s talk about the donghua, Against the Sky Supreme which is also known in Chinese as Ni Tian Zhizun. Just like what Tan Yun experienced in Against the Sky Supreme, the main character of Spirit Sword Sovereign has to endure humiliation and exact vengeance against the people that betrayed him. The donghua had been one of the most-watched series in recent years in China.
Immortal Tomb
Coming next is the 2022 fantasy-adventure Chinese animation Immortal Tomb or Xian Mu from Studio Soyep and Tencent Penguin Pictures. Adapted from a Chinese web novel of the same title. Quite similar to many generic cultivation donghua, Immortal Tomb is filled with action and the usual Chinese antics that we often have nowadays from other shows.

If you’ve watched Spare Me, Great Lord!, then the story of I Upset Millions of Cultivators is nothing new to you, albeit it actually shares a lot of similarities to many Chinese cultivation donghua – Perfect World, Martial Universe, and Stellar Transformations come to my mind immediately. An isekai donghua, I Upset Millions of Cultivators stay true to its title, the MC gets to level up and gets stronger by simply feeding on the negative emotions of the people around him, most particularly by upsetting them.
The King of Ten Thousand Domain
Wan Yu Zhi Wang | Otherworldly story and plot, just like Against the Sky Supreme, Wan Yu Zhi Wang goes beyond what we comprehend and offers the generic Chinese cultivation antics we often get. This time, it’ll be a story of resurfacing in the presence of an ancient power that has been lost in the tide of time.
Supreme God Emperor
Wu Shang Shen Di | Along with Soul Land and Spirit Sword Sovereign, this donghua had been among the most popular and most-watched in China. Supreme God Emperor is another story of betrayal and reincarnation. What remains of the once mighty Immortal King Muyun was awakened as the infamous “trash” of the Southern Cloud Empire, hence, a new legend is about to be written by an old soul, and through the help of all the knowledge and powers he once possessed.

Jueshi Wu Hun | Next is a donghua that you guys might be quite familiar with, it is Peerless Martial Spirit which was adapted from a novel by Luo Chengdong. It is a story of getting stronger step by step, of holding onto any opportunity that arises, and persevering to become the strongest of them all in a world where the strong prey on the weak – achieving the peak is the only choice to survive and obtain glory.
Tales of Demons and Gods
Another Chinese anime that is similar to Against the Sky Supreme which I’ve already mentioned in Tales of Demons and Gods had been adapted from the novel called Yao Shen Ji – one of the most popular Chinese cultivation novels out there. Just like Against the Gods, Tales of Demons and Gods is a story of betrayal and starting anew. It is one of the longest-running donghua and the start might be a bit rough but the animation sure gets better later on.

One of the donghua that sits at the apex of Chinese animation today and many fans had been praising is no other than Battle Through The Heavens which was adapted from a novel by Heavenly Silkworm Potato. Wushen Zhuzai | Also known as Martial Master, this donghua shares almost the same plot as many of the shows that I’ve already mentioned in this list and while that may sound redundant already, the donghua still has its own worth-watching perks.

Xianwu Dizun | Also known as the Banished Disciple’s Counterattack, this is the story of exacting revenge towards the people that betrays our MC and he had learned his lesson already, he’ll take no sh** anymore and will show who truly is the King of Martial Arts.
