In 2020, we had been treated to some spectacular crime and mystery anime adventures, therefore, I would like to share my top 10 mystery anime of 2020 in this list. These are the anime series that gave us a mindboggling experience and dares to present questions that will urge our curious minds to speculate and do some theories. At some point, some of them even play with our minds. On my end, I usually do theories but ended up getting surprised because these anime presented some major plot twists.

Here, I have 10 mystery anime that aired in 2020 that gave us a fantastic ride, and aside from filling our curiosity, some titles also delivered some fun moments, deep drama, and psychological thrill. Now, let’s start our list as follows:
In/Spectre
This is not just a romance anime but an investigative one that blew our minds away with all the theories that our goddess of wisdom had come up with. Surprisingly, Kotoko is a hell of a goddess of wisdom, she’s funny, she’s forceful, she’s everything we can ask for waifu material. What’s even more brilliant about her is her ability to solve cases that are beyond what normal people can perceive. In/Spectre is a supernatural-drama anime that touches other genres such as romance and mystery. We have two young people here, a couple might be an overstatement since at first, their relationship seems like a one-sided affair. Added with an ex-girlfriend in the story, In/Spectre presented a stunning crime-mystery story that involves a supernatural cliche.

The Millionaire Detective – Balance: Unlimited
It’s a bit sci-fi and more of a police-drama anime. So, we have two detectives here trying to solve various cases, one is using conventional means, and one is absurdly rich that he used all means possible through the help of money to solve cases. Now, that’s unconventional and that’s where we got the title of the anime The Millionaire Detective. It’s a solid drama of detectives solving criminal cases and the mysteries behind those crimes until the story pointed out the conspiracy behind the family of Daisuke, our millionaire detective. This anime is a riveting drama where it looks like MONEY IS EVERYTHING on the surface, but it went beyond that. What follows is an exciting adventure of the game of hide and seek.
Talentless Nana
One of the fall 2020 anime series that surprised me seriously. Talentless Nana presented a battle between the talented and the sole talentless spy among their ranks. In most cases, we had seen Nana, the talentless killed various talented people in their group and tries her best to deceive the others until one of her classmates got suspicious of her. That classmate is Kyouka, then we had seen them clash on various occasions when Nana keeps on doing her mission of eliminating the talented, while Kyouka keeps on finding clues and proof to unveil Nana’s misdeeds. The mystery begins when it seems like there’s more to the island where the story is set, a dark tragic past, and another murderer is mixed up in their group. This is an anime of the game Among Us, and everything is a mystery until all truth comes to the surface.

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard
We’re solving mystery cases in this anime and while it is not as bloody as the other titles in this list, this anime is a good ride that many fans of a slice of life and shounen-ai might enjoy. We have a handsome jeweler and his assistant solve various mysteries that concern their client, while their relationship slowly progresses until it is pointed out to the backstory of our jeweler Richard. It’s a story that will keep you in your seat as every episode is well-written and presented a mystery story in a slice-of-life setup.

Woodpecker Detective’s Office
Here’s another mystery anime from 2020 that I believed people should check. The visuals and the soundtrack are absolutely stunning and beautiful. The characters are fun to be with, and it has a historical setup that looks nostalgic. Story-wise, it is decent as it follows our main characters as they solve various crimes, albeit they are not detectives: one is a scholar, and the other is a novelist. While the mystery cases seem shallow or uninteresting at some point, the story truly revolves around the delicate relationship of the two main characters which I felt was a bit unconventional but also normal for friendship.
ID:Invaded
A psychological thriller anime that dares to solve mysteries by using a machine and potential criminals at its core. ID:Invaded is a hauntingly beautiful drama and mystery anime that gave an exquisite adventure for people who loves science-fiction and crime-drama story.

Gleipnir
Aliens and monstrous powers, what will you do if you, an average high school gained a supernatural power gifted to you by an alien but as an exchange, you get entangled in a deadly game where you can’t turn your back from? Gleipnir is a thrilling-action anime that dares to look for the answers to questions presented in the story and the mysteries behind it.

Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU
As a sequel to Higurashi: When They Cry series, this anime is a psychological-thriller anime that sought to find salvation. When death and destruction are inevitable, to whom shall you seek help? Will you defy fate and turn back time to seek the future you desire? Such is the case of Higurashi: When They Cry as we see Rika Furude and her friends defy fate but also experienced various deaths and hardships just to find that one future where salvation exists.
Babylon
What is evil? This anime is more of a psychological and drama story, but mystery-wise, it presented a lot of questions that still seek to answer until now. The anime ended several months ago, but the mysteries it brought up are still unanswered until now. Is evil necessary? Does evil need to exist to justify the good? It has been a disappointing ride I must say, but still, it’s a story that dares to mess up our psyche and ask questions that we as humans often disregard.
Moriarty the Patriot
Set a thief to catch another thief. Moriarty the Patriot follows the same path as Hammurabi’s “A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye”. To bring chaos and destroy society is the only way to achieve revolution and change, that is what Lord William James Moriarty aspires, and in this anime, we see him set fire in the rain as the crime consultant that tries to bring havoc to London and have the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes solve those cases. If you love Black Butler, Moriarty the Patriot is an interesting crime-mystery anime that you should check out.
