Tao Yao, Liu Gongzi, and Mo Ya are coming back but this time, with a different dub; yes, Fairies Album, also known as The Manual of Hundred Demons is getting a Japanese dub release in January 2024, to be specific, it’ll be on January 10.
Fairies Album, a donghua from Bilibili is joining the ranks of other beloved Chinese anime such as The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Link Click, Heaven Official’s Blessing, and Psychic Princess in receiving a Japanese dub version which I believe makes it more enticing enough, especially to anime viewers whose only barrier in watching donghua is the language.
Now, I think this is a perfect opportunity for avid fans of the series as we all patiently wait for Fairies Album Season 4 which is supposed to air this 2023 but it seems it’ll be moved until 2024. After all, the show had been airing 1 season a year since its first premiere in 2020. The 2nd and 3rd season was released in 2021 and 2022 respectively, with many fans expecting the 4th season to air this year. Nonetheless, we can only wait for more updates as the series was still listed by Bilibili as part of their 2023-2024 donghua lineup.
About “Fairies Album” (Bai Yao Pu)
Fairies Album is based on a Chinese novel called Bai Yao Pu, also known as The Manual of Hundred Demons, which also inspired a manhua adaptation called Hundred Demons Spectrum. The novel was written by Sha Luo Shuang Shu.
There is a powerful spirit doctor, renowned in the world of yaoguai (sentient spirits/demons/animals/forces of nature), who wears a silent bell, though few know what she looks like. She travels the world helping yaoguai who are suffering from various spiritual ailments, sometimes helping humans along the way. She is accompanied by a young monk and a serpent demon in the form of a man. We look into the stories of various yaoguai and the sources of their suffering.

This Chinese donghua holds an equally special place in my heart with some of my favorite Japanese anime such as Mushishi, Natsume’s Book of Friends, and Violet Evergarden. It tells a story of the human heart and emotions through poignant experiences of supernatural creatures called yaoguai. The art and pacing are clean and thoughtfully crafted to deliver a deeper dive into its world.
Additionally, Fairies Album holds some distinction among Chinese anime shows as it is among the few series to get released on the West officially along with the likes of Link Click, Heaven Official’s Blessing, Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire, and The Defective – most of these donghua are streamed on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and even on Netflix. A feat that most Chinese donghua aren’t given the chance at.
Fairies Album, along with Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire are among the previously announced shows to receive a Japanese dub in 2024 and it is something that we should all look forward to next year.
