The journey continues as our favorite troupe returns in The Westward Season 4 or also known as Xi Xing Ji 4. The donghua had been among the most anticipated sequels this 2022 from Tencent and had been listed as part of their spring lineup this year. Now, are you excited to learn about its release date? We’ll gonna find that out soon. But first, let’s take a look at how The Westward Season 4 had been announced and a short glimpse at it as a whole series.

The Westward Season 4 (Xi Xing Ji) Announcement
The 4th season of the Chinese action-fantasy anime The Westward had been first announced during the 2021 Tencent Video Animation Conference on August 8. Just in line with the recently concluded 3rd season of the donghua on July 28, 2021.
The series had been adapted from a popular manhua of the same title by Jianhe Zheng with the character designs provided by Zhihui Deng. Jianhe Zheng also wrote some more manhua such as Kuang Wang, the prequel to Xi Xing Ji (and also gets an upcoming adaptation from studio BYMENT), and Feng Shen Ji, the source material of another popular 3D donghua, The Legend & The Hero (Wu Geng Ji).
The Westward was first released on July 18, 2018, and runs for 16 episodes, it was later followed by the 2nd season in 2019. The Westward is also known by other titles such as Westbound, and Westbound Disciple. It can be said as an alternative tale to the popular Chinese classic The Journey the West.
Synopsis
The journey to the West was a conspiracy of heaven! After Sutra went missing for more than a decade, Heaven sent its army to search, in order not to let the Sutra once again fall into the hands of heaven, the journey to the West begin again.

Animation Studio & Release Date
Now, the most important question here is – When is the release date of The Westward Season 4? Well, after almost a year of hiatus, the series comes back this June 1, 2022.
BYMENT is returning as its animation studio while coming back as producers are Tencent Penguin Pictures and Tencent Pictures. After all, The Westward Season 4 is one of the biggest names in the 2022 Chinese anime lineup of Tencent. Zhengle Mai and Zhixing Zong are also coming back as chief directors for the series.
The Westward Season 4 is not just BYMENT’s upcoming donghua in the spring 2022 guide of Tencent, there’s also the adaptation of the 1960’s classic wuxia novel Legendary Twins by Gu Long. The studio is also handling the production of the Novoland Eagle Flag donghua adaptation which is based on a novel of the same title which paved the path towards the popularity and rise of Chinese web novels back in the early 2000s.
Where to Watch The Westward Season 4?
The donghua is scheduled for release on June 1, 2022, and it will be available on its official channel on Tencent Video: 西行纪 第4季. Furthermore, fans may also directly check its official page on Weibo to get direct updates about the upcoming 4th season which includes promotional videos and posters as well as countdown visuals, and interviews with the staff and cast.
In other news, The Westward also gets a movie this year called Xi Xing Ji: Qiong Qi Didong. It will be a full CGI film from still studio BYMENT but no release date has been unveiled for the film yet. One thing is sure though, we’ll definitely get more of dragons, the Monkey King, and a hell lot of exciting fights and interesting stories from our favorite characters in the series.
