The summer 2019 season is officially here and we have seen the first two weeks of the season so far and I think it’s about time to discuss it. Thus, I am writing our first impression review for summer 2019 anime lineup and I think I have to start it with saying I am taking back my first remarks about it when the season just started few weeks ago.
In this post, I will share my first thoughts about most of the anime shows that I have in my watchlist this season. To be honest, this is the first time that I have over 30 anime titles in my watchlist in an ongoing season including the leftover shows. At I thought, I could only manage over 20 shows like what I did from the previous season but as what people said, surpass your limit and that is what I am aiming to do this summer despite the exhausting schedule at work.

Stunning visuals, promising plot, lots of scenes of almost naked hot guys, a 3,000-year-old overdue love story, a youthful dream of a peculiar scientist, and lots of intriguing human philosophy for survival. With this, we all know that Dr. Stone is among the most brilliant stars of the season partnered with amazing animation and breathtaking scenery, this anime is seriously pulling the strings to win the competition for the best anime of the season.
Literally the only burning anime this season with so much passion for quality animation and a pretty decent story, Fire Force is a powerful contender for anime of the season with so many assets to back it up. I just love how much effort David Production had exerted on this anime project and I felt so happy because they didn’t space anything cheap on this one, thus giving us such a quality animated show which is really lit af. Furthermore, both the opening and ending theme songs were cosmic and truly gave me an eargasm.

Fierce and powerful, this is how Vinland Saga opens the season with too much action, drama, blood, and excitement. If there’s anything that could take the best action anime title so far, there’s no doubt that would be Vinland Saga. This amazing narrative story of Vikings from a different perspective is quite refreshing and at the same time exciting. If you guys love Berserk, then I am telling you to hold your breath, fasten your belt and add Vinland Saga to your watchlist and never look back. This is the perfect show for you this season, not to mention that its opening theme song is so damn addicting.
Astra: Lost in Space
This is our space odyssey story this season and it is really amazing though I have to admit I didn’t expect that much from it during those days that I am only reading its plot. Good thing I watched the first episode and I eventually fell in love with it. As of writing, I have watched the second episode already and I never regret putting this show in the Top 10 of our first weekly chart. If I could explain it in short, Astra: Lost in Space is like a light-hearted story of the movie AVATAR with humor and a little bit of conspiracy.
Funny, simple, romantic, and innocent Skilled Teaser Takagi-san could be described in those words. It’s a breathed of fresh air in this season which is filled with isekai story and action anime. So far, I couldn’t see yet the sparks that it has with its first season but I know that we are getting there one of these days. Though, until that day arrives, I couldn’t put Skilled Teaser Takagi-san higher than 6th place in our list. Nonetheless, this is a perfect anime to unwind and relax when I felt suffocated by all the heavy action, and stupid funny anime shows.
Gorgeous Butterfly: Young Nobunaga
Looking in Japan’s history from a different perspective and seeing the life story of one of its most influential and controversial figure is truly amazing. The animation quality for this anime is so good matched with lucid and dreamy visuals, I felt like dreaming while watching this. It sure is a beautiful show with an interesting take on the character of Oda Nobunaga and I love it so far.
If it’s For My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord
Now, we have here our basic RPG inspired anime, the genre which gained so much popularity lately and is synonymous with isekai genre. So far, this is a real gem among its peers and really is an innocent and adorable show to follow this season. I just love how cute Dale is, and especially Latina. I’ll say this is a different take on the genre which shows the simple and innocent daily life of an adventurer is a less serious mode. Though it’s quite too fictional to be so true on its genre, but I am really enjoying it and how fluffy the atmosphere it with this anime show.
This could be your ordinary urban fantasy mystery anime and I could sense a lot of Garo: Vanishing Lines vibes from this anime. Animation wise, it’s pretty solid with interesting characters to follow and a cliché that we all know about two anime characters put together to do their job. So far, I could endure it and I am simply enthralled by its plot and wanting to delve deeper into its story.
Isekai Cheat Magician
And here we have a legit isekai anime which is pretty obvious. The beginning is pretty rough and we didn’t get a glimpse of its world that much aside from the fact that the first episode is well-animated and the visuals look fascinating. Nonetheless, I am hoping for more about this anime and wishing it won’t turn out to be disappointing just like the Magi’s Grandson from the previous season which is not bad but I couldn’t say to be very good.
Danmachi Season 2
Well, we have the biggest anime of the season here and it fell short of our Top 10 though. A continuation of the 2014 hit anime series, the anime did have a very promising plot though the first episode didn’t live up that much to people’s expectation. One thing is sure though, Hestia is always followed by trouble and with that being said, we all know that Bell and the rest of the gang will be up to a fantastic adventure with conspiracy targeting his goddess and friends.
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
A Certain Scientific Accelerator
My favorite esper finally has his own show and the start isn’t really something so special but it is quite pretty decent. A Certain Scientific Accelerator is amazing on his own right though it still has some weakness which also exists on the other installments of its original franchise. I am not expecting that much from this anime show but I can’t really say that it’s bad and I think any scenes with Accelerator on it will definitely be lit and pretty insane for me.
The Wasteful Days of High School Girl
Damn, if there’s anything that I could say about this anime is that this is so me and my friends. It really feels so stupid and funny at the same time. Pretty naïve but that is how high school days most of the time is and I could somehow relate myself with some of the characters in the show. Bottomline, it’s not the best and there’s no depth in it at all, but The Wasteful Days of High School Girl is definitely an entertaining and pretty funny anime show that everyone who wants to laugh must watch.
Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?
What’s really amazing with isekai genre is taking the story and the cliché to the next level and this time, it couldn’t be more bizarre than having your mom transported together with you to another gaming world. It is cliché but at the same time unique and once that happens, you know you’re up to a funny and hilarious ride filled with motherly advice and shenanigans with the normal gaming RPG-inspired story. It lacks the same, but the fun sure is definitely there.
How Heavy Are the Dumbbell You Lift?
A funny and at the same time education approach of high school girls and gym life is the plot of this anime with a peculiar title as if the others show didn’t have any funny titles too. Personally, I am having fun watching this anime, from the main heroine complaining about her weight but couldn’t get the motivation to control her diet. I could definitely feel her and I am also on the same boat. From that almost perfect role model student in school but turn out to be a fitness maniac, and that handsome gym instructor who looks normal at first but his clothes randomly explode when he flex, these were only few of those funny cliché in this anime and they were done pretty well.
The Ones Within (Genome)
This is quite bizarre and creepy at some point. I love how these people with different personality and expertise in their own game were put together in one place to play a crazy game. This could be considered as another isekai anime too but with seriously interesting and peculiar characters. I love the characters of some of the characters, though the story could have so many flaws in some instances.
Another isekai and I felt having the same vibe as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime but with the different plot though. What’s amazing though is that the main hero is actually the developer of the game and not just some random player or nobody who gets transported into the gaming world. The animation quality and even the visuals were quite subpar but the story is actually fun on my end.
