Are you looking for more demon-slaying anime to watch? I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who had this craving recently after watching the success of several popular anime about slaying demons such as the 2019’s phenomenal hit Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Dororo, and 2020’s Jujutsu Kaisen.
In my search for interesting demon-slaying anime to satiate my craving, I ended up discovering some precious gems that I used to ignore or didn’t bother to check out before. Therefore, if you’re having the same struggle as myself, I would like to share this list of demon-slaying anime that never comes short in delivering the action, drama, humor, and sense of adventure that we usually look for. Furthermore, some of these anime even delve deeper and tackles humanity’s moral standards, our unfathomable desires, and wonders, and what makes us human.
Vampire Princess Miyu
Here’s a classic demon slayer anime from the 90s that people should check out because its story is as beautiful as its gorgeous visuals and enchantingly haunting music. Vampire Princess Miyu first aired as OVA in 1987, then as an anime series in 1997. This anime is episodic and follows the story of the titular character Miyu, a vampire who serves as the guardian, the one that sends stray Shinma into darkness.
In every episode, she encountered Shinma, some of them are evil, and some are good and display the same nature as humans, but in the end, Miyu is just an outsider, an observer, and just has to do her duty and destiny to send them away. Each episode will question the viewers, whether Miyu’s decision is right or wrong, whether her approach and action is justifiable or not, It leaves the overall understanding of the story through the eyes of its viewers, allowing them to interpret Miyu’s action and judgment. It has gloomy vibes showing the general corruption of the human soul.
Hell Teacher Nube
This anime from the 90s has been one of my favorite from my childhood days. It follows the story of a teacher who had a demon arm and can eliminate demons. Hell Teacher Nube as an anime is filled with comedic flair, actions, and teenage cliche which are rampant among his students. It has an episode approach that centers around Nube, his students, and various supernatural occurrences that happens to them. Aside from being a demon-slaying anime, Hell Teacher Nube is also following mystery-solving antics which makes it even more interesting especially for fans of old-school anime.
Vampire Hunter D
We have 2 movies available for this title, the Vampire Hunter D, and the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Both movies offered old-school anime vibes but I am more captivated by the second film due to its beauty and story deep. The anime follows the titular Vampire Hunter D, a half-vampire who is famous for killing vampires, as someone in-between the two races, both human and vampire resented him. Nonetheless, the anime does not revolve in him alone but around the people that he had met along the way during his vampire-slaying adventure.
Dororo
Here’s a title that many of you might be familiar with. Dororo is a real classic from the Father of Japanese Manga, Osamu Tezuka, and was first adapted into anime several decades ago. In 2019, Tezuka Productions and MAPPA collaborated for its remake which took the breath of many anime fans including myself.
It’s a beautiful and dramatic series following the story of a young man who has no other desire but to kill demons to regain his body which has been sacrificed by his father for the sake of their land. Joining him in his quest is the orphan Dororo, together they faced many exciting adventures while searching for the truth, and meaning of their existence. This is a demon-slaying anime in recent years that I liked better than Kimetsu no Yaiba. I have also listed it as one of the best anime from 2019.
Blood +
A strong-willed woman is the lead of this action and bloody anime from 2005. She has to fight her kind to stop them from causing troubles and bloodshed. The character development in this series is interesting and a sense of adventure many fans of the action genre out there will enjoy. If you like anime about hunting vampires, Blood + should be on top of your list.
Witch Hunter Robin
Demons also include witches who are using the power of the craft to do evil, and this is the highlight of Witch Hunter Robin. The anime itself has a lot of mystic vibes to offer to its viewers with great and progressive character development. If you think that hunting witches are not as challenging as hunting demons, you might be wrong there. That is why I urge you to watch Witch Hunter Robin and see for yourself how amazing and captivating this series is through its dark-themed story.
The Garden of Sinners
Kara no Kyoukai is a mystery dark-fantasy story that fans of demon-hunting anime will love, and it’s even animated by ufotable, the studio that brought us the phenomenal Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. It has so many mystic vibes and follows the story of a teenage girl and her classmates as they deal with supernatural cases that include demon-slaying, and tackling various issues like suicide, rape, magecraft, and topic as ambiguous as souls. The Garden of Sinners is presented in film installments comprising of 8 movies as follows:
- I. Overlooking View
- II. A Study in Murder, Part 1
- III. Remaining Sense of Pain
- IV. The Hollow Shrine
- V. Paradox Spiral
- VI. Oblivion Recording
- VII. A Study in Murder, Part 2
- VIII. Future Gospel
Additional film releases also include in the series such as Gate of 7th Heaven, Epilogue, and Future Gospel, Extra Chorus.
Claymore
This anime is filled with demon-slaying action and has a deep story that is enticing enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. It follows the story of a young demon slayer with the blood of the monsters she’s hunting in her veins. As she keeps on slaying demons, she is destined to become one of them. She was joined in her quest by a young man who lost his family to demons. Together, the woman has to fight the demons, and the young man has to do his best to keep her sane and becoming the monsters she’s destined to become.
Berserk
Berserk is a dark anime with plenty of action, bloodshed, violence, and some NSFW scenes. Aside from tackling corrosion of the human soul and emotions, it also shows how demons can easily corrupt humanity through their desires. It all started as an anime about war and bandits, and slowly became a mystic story where humans are just puppets and food for the demons, and the main character Guts has to defeat an opponent that he once held dear and the monsters behind him.
Hellsing
Here’s another vampire who kills vampire anime that people should see. A lot of action and bloodlust can be seen in this anime. The plot is pretty similar to other anime in this list but they usually have a different outcome and Hellsing is one that I must say had kept me entertained through the end.
Gai-Rei-Zero
Tired of vampire stories? Here’s an anime where we have 2 beautiful women fight undead zombie-like enemies. It has decent fight scenes for people who are looking for good action, and beautifully drawn visuals and animation.
Trinity Blood
A little bit classic and vintage, the plot of this anime is the usual plot we can find from any vampire movies or novels out there where vampires threaten humanity and some organization usually affiliated with the church has to make a move to save the day. Such is the case with Trinity Blood where we have a priest fighting vampires for the survival of humans and has to overcome many hurdles both from the vampire and human sides to achieve his goal.
Inuyasha
An old school anime and we all love it. Inuyasha is a perfect anime about hunting demons accompanied by actions, hilarious humor, and Japanese mysticism from the feudal era. The troupe is lead by the titular character Inuyasha, a half-human and half-vampire together with the isekaid high school girl turn into priestess Kagome, a traveling perverted monk Miroku, a demon-slayer Sango, and their yokai friends and allies.
