I’ve been meaning to write something about Inuyasha in this blog a long time ago and I am quite happy to finally get the chance to share my thoughts about its world, and characters. Growing up as a 90s kid, Inuyasha had been a very influential anime for me. I remember that I was still at 5th grade when I first saw it on our local TV station and although it is kind of generic in the beginning, it is an addicting anime due to its wonderful storytelling, promising character development, and exciting world-setting.
In this post, I shall share who are the most powerful characters from Inuyasha
and see what sets them apart from each other. In a story with supernatural creatures involving demons, exorcist, humans, and several entities from Japanese folklore, it’s easy to conclude the Inuyasha is a fun Eastern-oriented anime that showcase the beautiful heritage of Japanese culture and beliefs.
A short of introduction especially for readers who didn’t watch Inuyasha yet, it follows a high school girl Kagome who got transported 500 years in the past during the Sengoku period. Then, a wonderful, hilarious, exciting, and dangerous adventure began where he met a handsome half-human half-demon lad, a wandering perverted monk, a demon hunter, and young fox demon. Their group travel to defeat demons while collecting the shards of the Shikon Jewel on which the real evil lurks and is related to how she’d been transported into the past.
I won’t spoil that much about its story but the anime runs for a total of 197 episodes and even inspired 4 movies during the entire course of its run. The anime is based on a popular manga Inuyasha also known as Inuyasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi who is also famous for her other works such as Ranma ½, and Rin-ne.
Inuyasha runs with a combined episodic and slice-of-life approach in its narration. We had encountered a lot of recurring characters in its story but most of the time we have Inuyasha’s usual gang and their nemesis Naraku in most of its episodes. Therefore, to share the list of strongest characters from Inuyasha, I might have missed some characters that only appeared once. However, I do believe that what I shall input below were generally what the most viewers of Inuyasha think are the most powerful sets of people in its world.
Arguably the most powerful living character in the world of Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru is the older half-brother of our titular main character. He is a demon lord who inherited and ruled the Western Lands after their father died. He is someone that I can call as an original villain who eventually became an anti-hero and at some point a very powerful ally to our protagonists. He is adept in swordsmanship and could easily overpower Inuyasha in pure brute force. While his strength definitely sits atop our list, there are occasions where he didn’t win against his brother and almost died fighting Inuyasha at one point, all thanks to the sword that his younger half-brother inherited from their father. A little fun fact, Sesshoumaru is also without a doubt the most handsome character from Inuyasha
Demon of the Shikon Jewel
Without a name, this demon is the real culprit and could be called the real villain of the series. He is an immensely powerful dragon yōkai from ancient times. Not much is known about him other than the fact that he caused the great priestess Midoriko to trap their souls in what became the Shikon Jewel. At the end of the story, it is finally revealed that he manipulated Naraku at the tips of his hands.
The main antagonist in the story of Inuyasha. Aside from being an immortal-like creature who just won’t die easily, Naraku’s strength can be put into question. However, his greatest asset is his intelligence and his evil plots that makes him always ahead against his opponents. Despite his weakness of having a human heart at his core, Naraku is a cruel and manipulative demon, feared by many demons and even by his allies.
The evil presence corrupting the Shikon Jewel. This entity is an enemy who works with Naraku but was never his subordinate. He is a terrifying evil who will not stop until he gets what he wants. A testimony of his strength is the fact he sealed Kagome’s spiritual power which simply proves how powerful Magatsuhi is.
Our main hero is arguably among the strongest living character from Inuyasha. However, we had seen Inuyasha’s growth throughout their journey and he is no longer that innocent young demon who can’t walk the talk. Though his actions were impulsive and sometimes beyond reason, his strength has grown tremendously through experience. His father’s inheritance to him is also an additional factor that strengthens him. Being a half-demon and half-human, Inuyasha certainly has weak points compared to the full-fledged demon. However, that deficit is easily overpowered by the powerful bloodline that he got from his father who is known as one of the most powerful demons in the world-setting of Inuyasha.
Possibly the most powerful high-ranking priestess of her generation, Kikyo is a force to reckon with among demons and humans. She is feared by many demons and envied by another priestess. She was originally assigned the task to guard and purify the Shikon Jewel but eventually fell to the plot of Naraku, thus causing her own demise. She came back to life and became one of Naraku’s strongest nemesis while also aiding Inuyasha’s party on certain occasions.
Tōga – the Dog General
The father of Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha. He is a very powerful demon lord who serves as the Ruler of the Western Lands. A great swordsman and well-loved leader by his people.
An immensely powerful priestess and the creator of the Shikon Jewel. Her spiritual power is well-known during her time as she could easily purify demons by rendering them powerless in her presence.
Although Miroku’s moral and soul could be questioned, his strength is undeniable. He is definitely among the strong human characters in Inuyasha and his greatest weapon at his own disposal is the curse called Wind Tunnel that sucks up anything on its path down to an endless void.
She’s the consort of the Dog General and the mother of Sesshoumaru. We never saw the full extent of her power aside from the fact that she’s in a similar level as her son. She has the power to open a path to the underworld and even brought Rin back to life which means she may have the power to control over death and life.
The dragon demon lord who is among the factor behind the death of the Dog General.
Last but not the least in our list is our main heroine Kagome. Being called the reincarnation of Kikyo, she possessed a very powerful spiritual strength similar to her predecessor. She is a stubborn lady with decent skills in archery but believe it or not, her shooting skills are beyond amazing. Later in the series, she’s finally able to control her spiritual power which helps their group to overcome so many hurdles along their way.
That ends our list of top 12 strongest Inuyasha characters
though there are other names worth considering such as Bankotsu from The Band of Seven, Shitōshin, Kaguya from the 2nd movie, Princess Abi and her mother Tekkei (of the Demon Birds), Menōmaru, the dark priestess Tsubaki, Hitomiko, Tsukiyomi, Shishinki, and Koga.
Though our list is rank in no particular order, I am pretty confident they are so far the strongest characters from the world of Inuyasha. What about you guys, which one do you think is the strongest of them all and which one would you like to add or replace in the list in particular? On my end, I’ll vouch on Sesshoumaru as the most powerful Inuyasha characters.
Code name: Yu Alexius is an ambiguous entity who loves to talk about anime and Chinese animation in general. An insatiable soul from the Pearl of the Orient, a frustrated writer and a Houtarou Oreki wanna-be. He is a piece of a lunatic and everything crazy.
