Sankarea started off with a bang! Chihiro and Rea were such unique and captivating protagonists. I was completely hooked, especially with all the intriguing mysteries surrounding Rea’s family, Chihiro’s grandfather, and his mother. That cliff scene with Rea? Chilling!
Unfortunately, the series’ momentum dipped slightly after Rea’s transformation. While the core story remained engaging, some episodes, like Mero’s arc, felt a bit like filler. However, Aria’s backstory and the OAD were absolutely fantastic. The ending, with its implied tragedy, left me with a bittersweet feeling. It felt like there was so much more to explore.
But let’s talk about the visuals! “Sankarea” is a visual masterpiece. Studio DEEN absolutely knocked it out of the park, delivering that signature SHAFT-like style I’ve come to love. The intricate details and the way they used close-ups to convey emotion were truly captivating.

This anime tackles darker themes, explores the psychological complexities of its characters, and even delves into the ethical implications of Rea’s condition. While it might not have maintained its initial brilliance throughout, “Sankarea” remains a unique and unforgettable experience.
