The existence of a Demon Lord in various animations has been the norm nowadays, from the average Japanese anime up to some of the most lucrative Chinese donghua, these Demon Lord entities can be either a figure of great power or malevolence, and at times, are only dubbed by this epithet because other people just don’t understand where they came from.

Chinese Anime With Demon Lords
In this post, I would like to share a list of selected donghua that feature these demon lord entities, and they either play a vital role in the story or are just an antic used for the plot to move forward. Hence, if you’re into stuff with a demon lord in its plot, you might want to check out our list of top Chinese anime with demon lords in it.
The Furious Yama

Coming first on our list is the hilarious and adorable short donghua The Furious Yama from Bilibili. It aired in 2020 and has been among the funniest donghua I’ve ever encountered, and it’s even connected to other shows produced by Bilibili, such as The Daily Life of the Immortal King.
It is about a young Demon Lord who despite the power and position he held, is unexpectedly a coward deep inside. I think calling him a coward might be a bit too much, but he always had the bravado that does not usually speaks to what’s really in his mind, and the people around him assumed something else from his words and action. I think it doesn’t matter now, as long as he gets the job done, no matter how curled and unorthodox his methods are, and it is often due to a series of misunderstandings that always end up well.
The Love Story of a Fairy and a Devil (Cang Lan Jue)

Alright, next on our list is a love story which somehow feels like about a star-crossed lovers but it is more than that. This exciting and action-packed romance donghua from iQIYI is a must-watch for fans of Chinese animation who love bickering main characters. Yes, our protagonists seem can’t get along with each other because of their own respective circumstances but in the end, it is fate that connects them together.
The Demonic King Who Chases His Wife
We have a rather handsome yet tyrant husband-material in this donghua and we simply fell in love with him no matter how ruthless his reputation might be. He is quite the hot Demon Lord, isn’t he?

Technically, The Demonic King Who Chases His Wife is an isekai, or transmigration donghua with a twist of romance, fantasy, and drama. We follow the story of a top assassin from the real world who gets transmigrated back to Ancient China after his partner betrayed her. Now, she possessed the body of a good-for-nothing noble lady who often gets abused by her family. But our MC is no damsel in distress and this is where her fate collides with our tyrant lord.
Legend of Exorcism

Yao, or supernatural spirits, often called demons are the major antagonists in this Chinese BL donghua and they formed a hierarchy with the Demon Lord atop of the upper echelon. However, these demons are the enemies of our main characters who formed the special imperial department that deals with supernatural phenomena, the Bureau of Exorcism. If you’re a fan of boys-love or simply want to enjoy watching action-packed series, Legend of Exorcism is definitely for you.
Mad Demon Lord (Kuang Shen Mo Zun)
The title itself may speak about this story, but obviously such is not the case. We may deviate from our usual definition of Demon Lord in this donghua but still, even heroes always end up dubbed as demons, if they pursue methods that are not considered orthodox. At times, evils themselves posed as the good ones, and hence, those who rose against their tyranny often ended up as villains. That is why the anti-hero rises, and such is the story of the Mad Demon Lord, an adaptation of the Chinese novel of the same name by Qiyue Xue Xianren.
