As a fan of the high fantasy genre, the new anime called Kaina of the Great Snow Sea has truly captured my attention as it feels like my type of fantasy-adventure story to follow. The anime is a boy meets girl in a nutshell with high fantasy elements in a rather dystopian setting where the ever-expanding Great Snow Sea is gradually swallowing the world.
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is like any other fantasy story where humanity is at the brink of extinction and barely surviving but what makes it worse is the battle that ensues between them as natural resources are scarce as the instinct of humanity for survival is to wage war for the sake of obtaining those resources and such is one of the key scenarios to watch out for in this anime.
Now, for my fellow fans of the anime and the genre itself, you might be wondering if there are other anime like Kaina of the Great Snow Sea that you can binge-watch along with the series to further satiate your craving for a more fantastic ride. Coming first on the list is the heavy-filled story of Children of the Whales. A tale of sinners and their descendants, and the harsh truth that will rather set them free. It has a gorgeous and interesting world-setting as Kaina of the Great Snow Sea, however, Children of the Whales haven’t fully explored it and simply let us all savor the confinement within the floating vessel of Falaina as a world of its own.
The Pilot’s Love Song
If Children of the Whales have the floating Falaina sailing on the sea of sand, we have Isla in The Pilot’s Love Song – a floating island in the sky that serves as a fortress unbeknownst to its passengers, is a prison sent to fly to meet its demise. So, what’s the tea with this anime? Well, we also have a boy meets girl here, but there’s a twist, it can be another Romeo and Juliet story but can be a bit more complex than it is supposed to be. In a nutshell, we have the former prince and the girl who brought an end to his empire put together on this journey to their death.
Somali and the Forest Spirit
Next is one of my favorite high fantasy anime that reminds me of the likes of Lord of the Rings because it has its own world and it was fully nurtured and explored as the story progresses in the anime, and even more in the manga. Somali and the Forest Spirit follows the bond that connects an unlikely pair – a human child and a golem, who at the end of his life traveled a long journey to bring the child to any last surviving human camp but in the process, they found an impressive familial relationship like no other.

Made in Abyss
Looking for deep drama? Then, dive inside the Abyss with the adventure of young hearts with big dreams in the dark fantasy-adventure anime Made in Abyss. With well-written dialogues and great animation quality, this is probably one of the best anime like Kaina of the Great Snow Sea on this list.
Patema Inverted
We have the first of several anime films on this list and that is Patema Inverted which offers a good sci-fi ride with lost civilization antics, just like Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. The film offers a multi-layered world and plots, though the characters can be quite underdeveloped but still have a beautiful premise that is worth checking out.
From the New World
Shinsekai Yori | This is the story of humanity in the far future where what we have today had become a lost civilization. From the New World is the epitome of fantastic world-building to me and it put a lot of thought into portraying complex stories from different points of view. Just like Kaina of the Great Snow Sea, we have a boy and a girl who change how the world that they know works while embracing and remembering all the sacrifices along the way.
Origin: Spirits of the Past
The second anime movie in this like is a nostalgic ride as it offers a boy from the ancient era of humanity and the girl that awakened him from a deep slumber. Together, they work on saving humanity from another catastrophic disaster brought upon by humanity’s own greed for power.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
A work from the master himself, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was a masterpiece of Hayao Miyazaki and had been the precedent of many of his famous anime films. In the far future where humanity almost destroyed the world, the remaining survivors were at the mercy of the natural laws of the world that took control after the catastrophe and the expanding sea of wastes left behind by the ancient man-made disaster.
Knights of Sidonia
Sidonia no Kishi | Another masterpiece of Tsutomu Nihei, the original creator of Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. Knights of Sidonia brings us a fantasy story that was beautifully combined with science fiction with mecha and every bit of action we wish from it. In this anime, we have humanity in space after the Solar System was destroyed by a strange alien race, and follows the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity.
Cagaster of an Insect Cage
Mushikago no Cagaster | A rather complex story that involves human’s moral standards and survival instinct, Cagaster of an Insect Cage is an exhilarating ride to follow. A dystopian journey where humanity’s population was greatly decreased because of unique insects that infected humans to become giant uncontrollable monsters. Now, survivors have to kill their hearts and morals to stop these transformed humans into beasts as fast as possible to save the remaining survivors.
