Top 5 Good Anime To Watch When You’re Dramatically Bored

Nowadays, the anime genre is becoming more and more famous: Japanese animation quickly finds a response in the hearts of viewers of different ages and nationalities. Original plots, graphics created by talented artists, and interesting characters allow not only to have a good time watching anime but also to some extent even join the original oriental culture. And now I will tell you about the top 5 anime you need to watch. So, let’s get started!

Aoi Bungaku is a good anime to watch

Good Anime To Watch When You’re Bored (Recommendations)

“Classic Stories” (“Aoi Bungaku”), 2009.

Classic Stories (Aoi Bungaku)

What is it about: The series with the telling title “Classic Stories” (literal translation – “Blue Literature“, as the classics are called in Japan) is an adaptation of six plots from the Japanese school curriculum. Among the authors of primary sources are such founders of modern Japanese literature as Osamu Dazai, Natsume Soseki, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Among the plots, there are both historical parables (“Under the shade of blossoming cherries”, “Run, Melos!”

Why it is worth seeing: Like any almanac produced by several directors, Classic Stories is a rather bumpy show. However, his best episodes (due to the stylistic variety, they will be different for each viewer) fully justify the time spent. This anime had a hand, including the director of the notorious “Death Note” Tetsuro Araki, and the author of the manga “Death Note” Takeshi Obata (this time they worked on different segments).

“Serial Experiments Lain”, 1998.

Serial Experiment Lain Anime

What is it about: An introverted schoolgirl named Lane receives an email from a dead classmate who committed suicide a week ago. The letter says that she did not die, but only abandoned her physical body and digitized her own consciousness. This is how Lane’s mystical plunge into the depths of the global web begins, at the end of which she herself will forever cross the boundaries of the physical body.

Why it is worth seeing: Shown back in the 90s, “Experiments Lane” is an absolute classic of cyberpunk, not only anticipating the further development of the genre but also predicting the emergence of the digital over-reality that social networks have become at the moment. After all, the Wired network from the series, where the heroine transfers her own emotions and communication, is nothing more than a metaphorical image of Facebook and Instagram.

“Hellsing Ultimate”, 2006-2012.

Hellsing Ultimate Anime

What is it about: The British knightly order “Hellsing”, armed with the vampire Alucard (“Dracula” on the contrary), confronts the Vatican department “Iscariot” and the Nazi group “Millennium”, which is trying to revive the Third Reich with the help of a battalion of vampires, in a three-way war. The main character is the big-eyed and busty police girl Victoria Seras, who was accidentally turned into a vampire by Alucard himself.

Why it is worth seeing: The second adaptation of the Hellsing manga (do not confuse the Ultimate version with an older anime series that misinterprets the original source) is the brightest representative of exploitative cinematography, the peak of the development of the Japanese genre game. A frenzied, cruel, darkly absurd spectacle in which crazy characters (besides vampires, priests, and Nazis, there are werewolves, samurai, and cyborgs) exchange pretentious monologues and complex techniques in the best traditions of an Asian action movie.

“First Squad”, 2009.

First Squad The Moment of Truth Anime

What is it about: During the Great Patriotic War, the head of Soviet intelligence, General Belov, recruits pioneer Nadia with a katana at the ready for a special operation, and the pioneer heroes Lenya, Valya, Zina, and Marat, whom the special Sixth Department revives from the dead (their names are not named, but it’s easy to guess about real prototypes) … Meanwhile, the occultists from the German “Ahnenerbe” also do not sleep and return from the other world Baron Guido von Wolf, who died 700 years ago during the Battle of the Ice.

Why it is worth seeing: Like Hellsing, First Squad claims nothing more than pure genre fun, wild, and dynamic. This movie is unique in that it is a product of international cooperation: Russian scriptwriters and producers Mikhail Shprits and Alexei Klimov have joined forces with the director of the avant-garde anime studio 4 ° C Yoshiharu Ashino. The result is no doubt a Category B movie but made with rare imagination and scope.

“Code Geass”, 2006-2008.

Code Geass anime

What is it about: The exiled prince of the British Empire (including in this universe, among other things, both American continents) Lelouch Lamperouge accidentally gets the superpower “Geass” – a kind of hypnosis, forcing the interlocutor to carry out any order. Armed with the Geass, Lelouch becomes the leader of the terrorist rebels in occupied Japan – his plans include revenge on his own father, the emperor.

Why it is worth seeing: Code Geass is Death Note’s closest blood relative, an entertaining thriller centered around one enticing superpower. If the banned Death Note seemed too serious and pretentious to you, then Code Geass is a suitable alternative. This series is built entirely on outrageous plot twists and an entire army of “gods from the car”, and there are also giant robotic exoskeletons.
