Purple River Season 2 (Zichuan) Donghua Updates

Purple River (Zichuan) episode 42 just aired this September 20 and it marks the finale of the exciting donghua adaptation of the novel which gives us a Game of Thrones vibe in the style of Chinese animation. It ended in such a nerve-wracking and emotionally compelling denouncement for its 1st season it features the main character Zichuan Xiu on the run. Much like any other donghua and anime we had seen in years, that scene actually reminded me of Xiao Yan’s flee from the Jia Ma Empire during the Battle Through The Heavens: Three-Year Agreement.

With all the betrayal and drama, the politics in this donghua continues as it leaves us all craving for more. Now, this leaves a huge void that will be the driving force for fans to ask the question “Will there be a Purple River Season 2? Will the story of Zichuan’s donghua continue? What will happen to Axiu in Purple River Season 2?” and the list of questions keeps on crushing down like a heavy downpour.

Purple River Season 2 (Zichuan) Updates

As a donghua that centered on a plot with plenty of Western elements, Purple River is a rare gem among its peer. Personally, I felt like watching a Western fantasy story with the influence of those from Game of Thrones, and Tolkien’s works (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, etc). Since the donghua ended, Chinese anime fans have been speculating about Purple River Season 2 although, it may take quite a while until we eventually get an update about its release. Although, I think we’ll get confirmation whether a 2nd season is on its way soon.

After all, Purple River left us all with the main character Axiu on the run, escaping for his life after the intense struggles and dilemmas he went through. While we are not sure yet whether Zichuan is getting a 2nd season until an official announcement has been revealed, we can somehow transfer our attention to something else and that is the live-drama adaptation of the novel called The King of Light in Zichuan.

Meanwhile, Tencent Video Animation’s official Weibo page has posted an update about Purple River Season 2 in which it shows that the production team is in a meeting in preparation for the donghua’s return and aims to tackle the questions that were raised in the 1st season of the donghua. During the Tencent Video Animation 2023 Annual Conference, Purple River Season 2 was one of the shows that were unveiled at the event, and 2 more posters and a teaser trailer were revealed as a gift to its avid fans.

The King of Light in Zichuan

Do you know that there’s an upcoming Chinese drama called The King of Light in Zichuan? This is the live-action adaptation of the Zichuan novel by Lao Zhu and it is expected for release this 2022. It stars Yang Xu Wen (Zi Chuan Xiu), Liu Yu Ning (Di Lin), Zhang Ming En (Si Te Lin), Li Mo Zhi (Zi Chuan Ning), Gu Lan Di, and Han Ming Lin. The drama series is scheduled for 24 episodes with 45 minutes long each and will be streamed on iQIYI.

Back to the donghua adaptation, Purple River Season 2 may not release new updates or announcements until next year, however, one thing is sure though – Axiu will return with such a huge development on his end despite how rough and dangerous the path that he must take.

Purple River is adapted from a novel of the same name by Lao Zhu, it’s one of the few donghua that features military and warfare on an upscale level which will remind you of anime like Kingdom, and the donghua Qin’s Moon. It premiered on December 21, 2021, and has run for 42 episodes until September 20, 2022. Purple River was animated by studio Build Dream (the same studio working for the upcoming donghua Renegade Immortal) and produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures.
