Chang Ge Xing (The Legend of Princess Chang Ge) Manhua Gets Donghua Adaptation

One of the donghua that I have been eagerly excited upon learning is The Legend of Princess Chang Ge (Chang Ge Xing) which was revealed as part of the bilibili Chinese anime 2022 lineup from their annual event last November 20.

The Legend of Princess Chang Ge Announcement

This is a piece of exciting news for many fans especially those who had been following its source material, the Chang Ge Xing manhua series. The title for the donghua adaptation had been known as The Legend of Princess Chang Ge, I think that is to set it apart from another adaptation of the manhua which is the upcoming live-action drama called The Long Ballad starring Dilraba Dilmurat.

Alright, let’s go back to the donghua adaptation. The Legend of Princess Chang Ge was announced during the bilibili 2021 conference and it is among its lineup of adapted works along with The Three-Body Problem, I Have Refined Qi for 3000 Years!, The Last Summoner, The Ravages of Time, and SWARM to name a few.

Animation Studio, Release Date & Trailer

Handling the production of the donghua as the animation studio is BigBigSun. According to latest announcement from its production team, Chang Ge Xing (The Long Ballad) release date is scheduled on February 23, 2025. The animation quality based on its trailer shown below looks surprisingly good and will remind you of movies like The White Snake and its sequel, the White Snake 2. There’s a certain charm and mystique on its story and it is another donghua that has been set during the Tang Dynasty so it’ll be a familiar atmosphere to many avid viewers of Chinese animation.

The action-adventure and period-drama donghua is inspired by a Chinese manhua called Chang Ge Xing by author Da Xia which follows the journey of a princess who seeks vengeance for her family and in order to fulfill her quest, she needs to pass and confront what’s about to come to her life. If we have to follow this chronologically in time, the story took place earlier than the timeline from other donghua such as The Memory of Chang’an, and The Legend of Exorcism – both were set during the Tang Dynasty.

Synopsis

Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty of China (618-907): The demon star is passing through the sky, calamity is about to befall the Tang Dynasty – because of a woman. The story is set in the early Tang Dynasty, after the Xuanwu Gate Incident, in which Li Shimin the prince of Qin, killed the crown prince and usurped the throne soon after. It is under such background that our female protagonist set out to discard her former identities and seek revenge against the most powerful man in her world. Skilled in martial arts and war tactics, Princess Li Chang Ge sets out to avenge her family and take back the throne.

Chang Ge Xing had been also known by other titles such as Choukakou, Chang Ge’s Journey, March of the Long Song, The Chinese Princess, La Princesse Vagabonde, Song of the Long March, and Singing All Along.

The original manhua was first released in February 2011 and had been on hiatus for quite some time. Its author is the award-winning manhua artist Da Xia who is also known for her other works such as April Story, Eternal Moment, Bu Tian Ge, Shiyi Lu, and Zi Bu Yu. The latter had been published in Japan too on which her work was praised by the editor-in-chief of the Saint Seiya manga series, Matsui Sakamoto.

Now, it’s time to add the series as one of the series that we should all keep an eye on bilibili in the years to come. You can directly check its official page on bilibili on which updates and additional promotional materials are being posted. We shall keep you updated too about it, so don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletters and follow us on our social media outlets.
