Spring 2020 Chinese Anime Lineup – List of Donghua to Add in Your Watchlist

Spring 2020 Chinese Anime Lineup

Hey guys, time flies so fast and we’re now entering the spring 2020 anime season. Yes, winter is almost over and I am sorry that I am not able to make a post about it when the season started but 2020 had been up for a great start because of some good shows from it which include Planting Manual, The Daily Life of Immortal King, The Furious Yama, Antidote, and Rakshasa Street Season 2. Most of them were from the heavy line of Chinese anime from Bilibili production for 2020.

Now, it’s about time to prepare our watchlist and take a look at the spring 2020 lineup of Chinese anime shows. I am excited about this season since there is plenty of huge donghua slated to air this spring and they’re among my favorites. So, let’s start our glimpse at this year’s great lineup of anime shows from China airing in April 2020.

Hundred Demon Manual

"Hundred Demon Manual" Chinese Anime

Bai Yao Pu – Ah, this one is among my most anticipated Chinese anime of 2020. Hundred Demon Manual or also known as Hundred Demon Spectrum or Manual of Hundred Demon is another beautiful project from Haoliners Animation League which previously gave us the gorgeous donghua Fox Spirit Matchmaker and Spiritpact.

We follow the adventures of a mysterious young girl, accompanied by a young monk and a demon doctor. Together, they solve human problems and cure illnesses caused by demons and ghosts.

With the plot in mind, Hundred Demon Manual reminds me of Mushishi and Natsume’s Book of Friends which were my 1st and 2nd favorite anime of all time, but the closest that I could compare to it is Inuyasha. Dealing with supernatural creatures, and touching the lives of both human and demons in one way or another, Hundred Demon Manual is a promising donghua filled with the typical Chinese humor, and drama while taking a glimpse at its ancient culture. I have watched the opening theme for Hundred Demon Manual and it’s obnoxiously enchanting and dreamy with Li Yugang’s song.

Hundred Demon Manual release date is scheduled for April 25, 2020.

All Saints Street

"All Saints Street" Chinese Anime

Wan Sheng Jie – A comedy-fantasy anime from the Tencent anime lineup for 2020 which will take over the Wednesday 10:00 AM slot occupied by Non-human at Tencent Video. All Saint’s Street release date is scheduled for April 1, 2020.

The story is essentially a western spinoff of Non-Human. We have a comedy story with a ton of western supernatural beings surviving the modern world and living together at 1031 All Saint’s Street with demons, angels, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures living together. (Via: @cuchallain of Donghua Review)

The story is set in the modern world or shall we say modern China and the humor is both funny and charming instead of having the obnoxious hilarious tone. According to V2anime.com donghua listing, All Saint’s Street will have a total of 12 episodes.

White Cat Legend

"White Cat Legend" Chinese Anime

Da Li Si Ri Zhi – Here’s one of my most anticipated Chinese anime of the year with great animation and visually stunning graphics. White Cat Legend is a project of Nice Boat Animation and is scheduled to premiere on April 10, 2020 at Bilibili.

We follow the daily life of Shen Shi, a young man looking for his brother. To find him, he goes to the Dali Temple. One thing led to another, he eventually became an officer for Li Bing, a senior official with the appearance of a white cat.

White Cat Legend is scheduled to have 12 episodes, and back in 2018, it has a joint pre-screening for its first episodes together with another heavy upcoming Chinese anime – The Fog Hill of the Five Elements. The two donghua projects were connected since White Cat Legend is under Nice Boat Animation which also supports the Samsara Animation Studio of The Fog Hill of the Five Elements.

Stellar Transformations / Legend of Immortal Season 2

Here's one of the biggest Chinese anime of 2020 and it's the 3DCG Stellar Transformations season 2. I am seriously excited for this since I really loved its first season which aired last 2018. It's one of the most genuine xianxia anime out there, far superior than other cultivation anime in terms of respect to its genre. Stellar Transformations season 2 release is slated on May 3, 2020 from Tencent Video.
In a galaxy far away, there is a kid without innate ability to practice internal techniques. So, in order to gain the respect of his father, he resolutely chooses to follow the more difficult and painful path of practicing external techniques. As the years go by, eh grows up, but what really changes his life is a mysterious meteoric crystal stone – the Meteoric Tear. This stone fuses with the young man’s body unnoticed, and he seems to undergo drastic transformations as a result. After that, everything is changed. Eventually his father knows that the son for whom hasn’t really shown a lot of consideration possesses astonishing abilities. And there’s a lot more to come. (Source: Novel Updates)
We had posted a short overview about Stellar Transformations and its 2nd season trailer here: Stellar Transformations Season 2 Anime Trailer & Release Date.

Hitori no Shita: The Outcast Season 3

Hitori no Shita: The Outcast Season 3

Finally, Hitori no Shita season 3 confirmed its release date which is slated on April 24, 2020. The gang from one of my favorite fantasy-action-comedy donghua is coming back to continue where the story left off from its previous season and it promises more action and humor to invade the spring season.

Metaman

"Metaman" Chinese anime

Wang Gu Shenhua Zhi Tian Xuan Zhe – Well, that is quite a longer Chinese title but we’ll simply call this one as Metaman, an action-adventure sci-fi donghua which will be released on April 7, 2020.

The story is set in 2115 and follows Wei Qin, a female major in the border troops who is under attack for refusing to drop an investigation into a past tragedy.

While I am personally not captivated by the story on which I won’t expect too much, I am seriously enticed with its world setting and how cool the animation is.

Everlasting Immortal Firmament Season 4

"Everlasting Immortal Firmament Season 4" Chinese anime

Wangu Xian Qiong 4th Season – Now, one of the most hilarious Chinese comedy anime of all time is back for its 4th season and I couldn’t describe how excited I am for this. Aside from the heavily racist jokes, which is also stated it its disclaimer, Everlasting Immortal Firmament had been one of the dirtiest, nastiest and funniest anime story I’ve ever seen with a unique and shameless comedic approach in its narration and dialogue infused with Chinese culture and beliefs, further intensified by parody from contemporary shows. Everlasting Immortal Firmament Season 4 release date is scheduled on April 16, 2020 as part of Tencent Video 2020 Chinese anime lineup.

God of Deception

"God of Deception" Chinese anime

Shi Huang Zhi Shen – One of the most hyped action-fantasy Chinese anime of the year is coming this spring and it’s God of Deception which is also known as God of Lies. This is another giant title from Haoliners Animation League and is slated for release on April 1, 2020. Among the staff for God of Deception is its original creator Gui Yong, its director Yi Dong, and Bingyin Yang who’s working on its music. The anime will have a total of 13 episodes and will premiere both on Bilibili and Youku.
God of Deception is originally scheduled for release last September of 2019 but was delayed until 2020. It’s the first project coming out of Bilibili’s acquisition of the now-defunct NetEase comics. On my end, I could feel the same ambiance here as The Daily Life of Immortal King and I just hope the beautiful animation will be consistent throughout the series. I have also posted my first impression review about it here: "God of Deception" anime first impression review.

Tales of Demons and Gods Season 4

"Tales of Demons and Gods Season 4" Chinese anime

Yao Shen Ji: Zhi Hei Yu Pian – Here we have the 4th season of Tales of Demons and Gods. It’s one of the longest-running and ongoing Chinese anime with over a hundred episodes on it. The story is your typical cultivation anime filled with drama, action, and various twists and turns in its plot. Tales of Demons and Gods Season 4 were listed as part of Bilibili’s 2020 Chinese Anime projects.

While I am not a huge fan of the series and I only watched a few of its episodes, I’ve been quite familiar with since I have this colleague at work who is a big fan of the donghua and keeps on dumping all the spoilers in me. Nonetheless, this is huge news for the avid fans of the series. Tales of Demons and Gods season 4 release date is on April 8, 2020.

Those Years I Opened a Zoo

"Those Years I Opened a Zoo" Chinese anime

Wo Kai Dongwuyuan Naxie Nian – Now, we have here the 3rd project from Haoliners Animation League (the other two as previously mentioned above were Hundred Demon Manual, and God of Deception). Those Years I Opened a Zoo is a more appropriate anime to take over The Daily Life of Immortal King in my watchlist due to the similarity of its ambiance and the humor aspect.

Duan Jiaze inherited a private zoo and was forced to sign a contract after his graduation. And from that day onwards, the first-ever age classified Luya zoo appeared, those aged under 21 are prohibited to enter. (Via: Twitter user Xiyoumiyu)

So, what’s the tea here? It’s the fact that the zoo itself is haunted by supernatural creatures. Yes, it could have been like the All Saint’s Street or the Hundred Demon Manual but in a lighter and more humorous note. It is based on BL/danmei web novel of the same title and it’s just an adorable furball of sunshine beaming with so many good vibes in the spring 2020 donghua lineup. Those Years I Opened a Zoo release date is slated on April 5, 2020 with 13 episodes listed under it.

The Chronologist

Chinese anime "Huangli Shi"

Formerly known as Huangli Shi, The Chronologist is among the new lineup of Tencent Video for spring 2020 donghua season although the anime had been announced last year and its release has been delayed for several months. Now, Huangli Shi will premiere on May 7, 2020 at Tencent Video and will be one of the biggest boys love donghua of the season. What's even more amazing is that it's animated by B.CMay, the same studio that gave us Mo Dao Zu shi.

Chivalrous Hero Shen JianXin Season 2

"Chivalrous Hero Shen JianXin Season 2" Chinese anime

JX3 anime adaptation is having its season 2 premiered on March 27, 2020; thus officially started the spring 2020 season for Chinese anime. There’s no way that Chinese anime fans shall ignore having this donghua on their watchlist this season as it’s one of the nastiest and funniest one out there filled with parodies on Chinese culture and martial arts while also giving us decent fight scenes and solid animation. The animation had combined a 3D and 2D aesthetic which makes the whole experience of watching it visually stunning.

Spicy Girl

"Spicy Girl" Chinese anime

Mala Nupei – Here’s another project from Tencent Video and it’s Spicy Girl which gives me the vibes of those stories that I once read from pocketbooks during my high school days. It is one of the anime this year which has been outsourced in Japan and will have both Chinese and Japanese dub. The donghua is based on a comic by Chuxin Manhua and will be released on April 7, 2020.

Plot: Since her childhood, Su Xiao has been sidelined because of her frightening aura. Now an actress, she unfortunately, remains stuck in the roles of villains. One day, Xiao Jian, a well-known investor, and actor, comes across a scene between Su Xiao and his manager. In order to silence him, Su Xiao signs a contract with him (Via: Nautiljon)

Meng Huan Shu Yuan Season 3

"Meng Huan Shu Yuan Season 3" Chinese anime

Here’s a short Chinese anime this spring 2020 which was animated by NetEase. It is a chibi anime that will premiere on April 6, 2020 with airing time of at least 3 minutes.

Spirit Wind Elegance

"Spirit Wind Elegance" Chinese anime

Here we have a donghua that I have first watched way back in 2017; however, there were only 2 episodes at that time. The next time I heard the news about it was when it was listed as among the 2020 Chinese anime lineup of Bilibili, thus, reviving the flame of my excitement for it. If I remembered right, I was head over heels on Chinese anime that time after finishing the 1st season of The King’s Avatar and I stumbled upon their cute story of two young characters that are shrouded in mysteries.

Project 48

With magic and aliens shenanigans, Project 48 is another excited donghua airing this April from Tencent Video. The art style looks beautiful with decent animation. It’s more like a combined fantasy and sci-fi in one plate and I just couldn’t wait for what’s in store for us though I am not expecting anything extravagant just to avoid huge disappointment. Project 48 release date is scheduled for April 8, 2020.

And this is where I end my list of Chinese anime airing this April of 2020. We could simply consider this as spring lineup if we will follow the Japanese releasing format but Chinese animation is quite random and usually release their donghua once it is ready. Nonetheless, I am quite confident that this lineup could fare very well even with the heavy dosage of amazing shows from Japan’s spring 2020 anime lineup which is composed of huge sequels such as Kaguya-sama Love is War Season 2, Food Wars Season 5, Oregairu Season 3, Fruits Basket Season 2, and the finale of Sword Art Online Alicization Arc: War of the Underworld. Furthermore, we also have ever-popular The Tower of God receiving its anime adaptation as part of Crunchyroll original, thus becoming the most highly anticipated anime adapted from a Korean webtoon.

In the end, this list will be updated once we get new updates if further donghua titles will be added or announced to premiere this April or May 2020. For more Chinese anime airing this 2020, you may want to check our separate post about it as follows:
