In everyday life that I am binge-watching anime and I should be thankful that I could still found some time to do it and still not losing my job, it is such a pleasure to discover some gems. And what I will discuss in this post is about an anime show, a Chinese anime to be specific that truly captivated me and only showed me what the Chinese anime industry could do on a serious level. All this time, I have The King’s Avatar as my greatest influenced and converted me to watch Chinese anime despite seeing other new titles that could challenge its quality such as the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and the upcoming Fog Hill of the Five Elements. Though I have to admit and I am a little bit regretful that there’s a gem that I did ignore all this time despite seeing it a lot of times in several Chinese anime database websites.

I am talking about Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens. I should be thankful to my fellow donghua fan on Twitter, @QingSub (Qing_Long – Fifine) for suggesting it to me a lot of times. I am writing this post to share my thoughts about the different characters from Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens and how overwhelmingly strong they are as well as how amazing its fight scenes are.

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - The Quicksand
Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens – The Quicksand

As what its title suggests, Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens is related to the Chinese anime Qin’s Moon or The Legend of Qin which first premiered in 2006 and is considered as one of the earliest classics of the Chinese animation. The series is still running until now spawning several seasons including the upcoming The Legend of Qin Season 6 and a series of spin-offs and special episodes which had been a heavy contributor to the growth of Chinese animation industry for over a decade.

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens is a spin-off of The Legend of Qin and is a prequel to its story which took place several years before the present timeline in the main series. However, despite being a spin-off Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens has an independent story and what I love about it is that I can enjoy it wholeheartedly without thinking too much about the main series as I am not able to finish The Legend of Qin yet and I am still stuck at its second season. Furthermore, anyone can watch and understand the story of Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens without even watching a single episode of the main series.

A short review, Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens anime first premiered in 2016 and as of writing have a total of 73 episodes. Its second season premiered last April 2019 at 61st episode continuing where the story stopped at the season 1 finale. Personally, I binge-watched the first season for 4 days, too bad that I have some work to worry about it or else I could’ve had finished it in a shorter period of time. However, the entire experience of watching it is bliss and I couldn’t get its theme song from my head ever since the first time I heard it when they use it as the first opening theme for the series. It is so enchanting and I think truly befitting for the title of the series.

The story is usually your typical martial arts Chinese drama with political conspiracy, fantasy, and mystery involved. However, what sets it apart from its contemporary is the amazing narration; the storytelling is as enchanting as its music and truly gave us a glimpse at the details of its setting and the characters.  I even enjoyed all the back story of some of the characters and felt like the producer didn’t spare any amount of money to save in order to give us quality animation. Yes, so far Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens have the best fight scenes that I have ever seen from a 3D animated show from China. I think it could compare with those from the Hollywood and the closest donghua I could compare to its quality is Nice Boat Animation’s WHITE SNAKE movie which had been released last January. In overall, I think White Snake edged out Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens but the gap is very small based on my personal standard, and the movie is supposed to be more colorful and visually stunning due to its fantasy setting compare to the series conspiracy theme which is suited for a darker palette of colors.

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Han Fei
Han Fei – he is the main protagonist of the series and our cinnamon roll. Good thing he had strong allies beside him so it’s worth mentioning our 9th prince of Han State here as the entire story revolves around him.

Returning to my original topic, Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens have several strong characterswhich really worth mentioning as the fight scenes in the series were truly mesmerizing. This is actually my first time to write a Top 10 strongest characters post for a Chinese anime though I have previously written about the best team captains from The King’s Avatar. In this post, I’ll share the list ofthe strongest characters from Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens and how amazing is the fight scenes of the show.

A short intro though, there are several powerful groups in the story of Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens and these groups control the exchange of power in the story. Among these groups were the Purple Orchid House (which house the Quicksand), The Nightfall, The Remnants of Baiyue, the Qin Empire, and the Net Trap.

Honglian

Qin's Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Honglian
Han State’s Princess Honglian (a Quicksand member)

Princess Honglian is the bratty princess of Han State and the favorite daughter of the Han Emperor. She’s learning martial arts in the series though her strength is still inferior compared to other people in this list but she’s more than capable of holding her own against a normal fight with the ordinary bandit. Later on, she gained the ability of the crimson king snake which proves to help her cultivation to become a powerful poison master later on in the main series. A little bit of spoiler, she became Wei Zhuang subordinate in the main series and one of the antagonists there.

Nong Yu

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Nong Yu
Purple Orchid House’ Nong Yu (a Quicksand member)

A timid yet curious lady, Nong Yu possessed two personalities which could easily confuse other people and a quick wit that could even fool the Bloody Marquess. She is a skilled guqin player and seems harmless, but beyond her beauty and innocence is a determined and impulsive assassin who’s willing to sacrifice herself to do her task.

Wushuang Gui

Qin's Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Wushuang Gui
Remnants of Baiyue’s Wushuang Gui

Wushuang Gui is the biggest member of the remnants of Baiyue who is using his sheer strength of the brute force to fight his opponent. His body is huge and capable of hardening it to the point that both swords and arrows will be blocked for a certain period of time. His strength is beyond measure showing that is able to break an enchanted prison tank. I think his defensive skill is among the simplest yet effective one in the series so far.

Bai Duwang

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Bai Duwang
Poison master Bai Duwang from Baiyue

An elderly man who is adept in using Baiyue’s poison art, Bai Duwang is able to make his victims see illusions of a snake attacking them using his poison. Among the remnants of the Baiyue, Bai Duwang is the one who is inclined in using poison from different snakes that are living in the Poisonous Pit. He is skilled that he almost killed Moya in one of their clashes when they invaded the palace of the Crown Prince.

Qu Shimo

Qin's Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Qu Shimo
Baiyue’s Shaman Chief – Qu Shimo

This guy who is always shown in cloak is the secret shaman chief of Baiyue. He is an ambiguous and dangerous opponent with the ability to bring the dead back to life as his zombie army. He is able to overpower Moya and Baifeng during their first encounter while also able to restraint Zinu when he accompanied Tian Ze on infiltrating the cold palace. In most of the fight, he is seen to be on a supporting role for Tian Ze and Yanling Ji.

Han Qiancheng

The adopted son of Han Yu (Han State 4th prince and also one of the powers aiming to control the Han State), Han Qiancheng is an extremely skilled archer and an adept fighter. His intense fight with Baifeng is among the highlight of the series when he tried to kill the Crown Prince of Han while Baifeng protected the latter who had been kidnapped by the remnants of Baiyue.

Baifeng

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Baifeng
Baifeng of Hundreds of Birds faction of Nightfall

Baifeng is Moya’s subordinate and is one of Nightfall’s strongest assassins. His lightness skill is among the most impressive in the series and could be compared to Moya. His fight against Qu Shimo is quite good when the secret Shaman chief of the Baiyue had been introduced. I think his best fight scenes so far is his showdown against Han Qiancheng on which he protected the Crown Prince of Han from the attack of the highly skilled archer. In the main series of Legend of Qin, Baifeng is among the subordinates of Wei Zhuang in Quicksand and his among the antagonists there.

Zinu

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Zinu
Purple Orchid House owner Zinu (she is one of Quicksand founding member)

She’s the owner of Purple Orchid House whose identity is covered by too much ambiguity and mystery, arguably one of my favorite characters in the series. Not much is known about her other than the fact that her Purple Orchid House had been a gathering area to gain intelligence data about what’s happening in the Han Empire as well as in the other states. She’s also a skilled fighter capable of using her snake sword, Chilian. She is among the few people who have close ties with Wei Zhuang and one of the greatest mystery of this lady is the fact that she holds a very important identity. She had saved our main protagonist Han Fei a lot of times and even fought against Tian Ze.

Moya

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Moya & Baifeng
The leaders of Hundres of Birds faction of Nightfall –  Moya & Baifeng

From the Hundreds of Birds, Moya is one of the top assassins of Nightfall and in the entire Han State even able to easily assassinate high ranking officials of the court. He is the senior of Baifeng and his battle against Wei Zhuang is among my favorites in the series. Whenever we saw some crows in the donghua, it only means that we are up for Moya’s appearance in the story.

Yanling Ji

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Yangling Ji
Baiyue’s Yangling Ji

Gentle like water and warm like fire, that is how Yanling Ji had been described. She’s a skilled fighter with the ability to control fire and she could even cast illusions. In most of her fights, she had fought Bai Yifei and Wei Zhuang. She is probably the strongest female fighter in Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens, not accounting Zinu’s real strength. In the recent episodes, it seems that Tian Ze left her to Han Fei’s group to be an observant though I think she could be their temporary ally too.

Tian Ze

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Tian Ze
Tian Ze – the Crown Prince of Baiyue

Tian Ze is the Crown Prince of Baiyue who had been imprisoned by Bai Yifei for 10 years. He is one of the most powerful sorcery in the series so far though he seems to be inferior to Bai Yifei in some fights. At first, though they are on the same league but now that he was freed from the curse, it seems that he could finally unleash his full strength. Despite having the shorter end of the stick, he could fight Bai Yifei one on one, and he could also hold his ground towards Wei Zhuang. He is a man who is dedicated to rebuilding Baiyue after his country had been destroyed by the combined effort of Han and Chu.

Wei Zhuang

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Wei Zhuang

Wei Zhuang is the junior brother of Ge Nie from the Ghost Valley. He one of the most skilled swordsman in the story so far, with only Ge Nie and Xuan Jian, showed to be more skilled than him. He is nonchalant and the taciturn type of person. He is very observant and aside from being a prodigy in swordsmanship, his intelligence is also above of almost everyone in the series. Wei Zhuang is strong enough to take on Yanling Ji, Qu Shimo, Bai Duwang, and Wushuang Gui alone during the rescue mission for Honglian. He is also seen to exchange blows with Bai Yifei though he had been wounded terribly by Xuan Jian during the raid in the Purple Orchid House.

He is one of the main protagonists of Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens while in The Legend of Qin, he is the leader of Quicksand and is considered as one of its most powerful antagonists in the main series.

Ge Nie

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Ge Nie
Qin State Master Swordsman Ge Nie

Ge Nie is the calm and observant senior brother of Wei Zhuang from Ghost Valley. He is considered as the number one swordsman in the Empire of Qin when he gained the respect of the Qin’s emperor – Ying Zheng. In the main series of The Legend of Qin, Ge Nie is among the companions of the main protagonist and served as his protector. In my own opinion, Ge Nie and Wei Zhuang reunion fight are among the best fight sequence in Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens in Episode 50 of the series.

Xuan Jian

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Xuan Jian
One of the strongest assassin from Net Trap – Xuan Jian

Xuan Jian is the highest-ranked Heaven Level assassin of Net Trap. He is an extremely skilled swordsman wielding two-types of swords. He overpowered Wei Zhuang in the raid of Purple Orchid House and he seems to be even more skillful than Ge Nie. In the recent episodes of the series, his backstory is told showing how he loses his wife and how he became one of Net Trap’s most notorious assassin. His real name is never unveiled though the name Xuan Jian is from his dual weapon of black and white swords.

Nilin

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens
Nilin Sword Spirit – Nilin

Nilin is the name of the sword but could also be given to the spirit that wields it. Though, no one knows who is the owner of the Nilin sword, we could conclude that the spirit is its owner and is so far one of the strongest characters in Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens whose full strength is never revealed yet as he only appears in crucial moments when Han Fei’s life is in grave danger. I just want to see him and Bai Yifei though in an open clash to finally see who is stronger. Nonetheless, we did manage to see him overwhelm Tian Ze and it’s definitely among the highlight of the series for me.

Bai Yifei

Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens - Bai Yifei
Pure White, Blood Marquess of Nightfall – Bai Yifei

The Bloody Marquess (Pure White, Blood Marquess) whose real name is Bai Yifei cultivation ability could be compared to what we call vampirism. Yes, Bai Yifei could be called the vampire of Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens and he seriously has the skills to back that up. In own opinion, Bai Yifei is the strongest and most formidable characters to appear in the series so far as of writing this post. He easily overpowered Nong Yu and even captured Yanling Ji during his offense against the remnants of the Baiyue. He was able to hold Tian Ze in captured for several years and could easily fight Tian Ze and Yanling Ji combined effort in the Purple Orchid House raid.

So far, these were the list of the strongest characters in Nine Songs of the Moving Heavensthat I felt like any movement of them could affect the course of the story of the series especially those in the upper echelon of this list. Though, I would like to mentioned that intelligence and decision-making is also a power that could manipulate anyone that is why I have to mention Han Fei and Han Yu here as this brothers were definitely not the fighter type but could make other people do their bidding and their actions could definitely affect the story especially our protagonist Han Fei.

If you hadn’t watch Qin’s Moon: Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens yet, I highly advise you or even urge you to watch it especially if you like 3D animation shows such as The Legend of Qin, Martial Universe, Battle Through The Heavens, Soul Land, Stellar Transformations, and the like The Legend and the Hero. I’ll say Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens were superior to these Chinese anime shows as of now, it is definitely worth checking out if you’re among those anime fans who venture to follow Chinese anime industry as it grows.
