Studio Ghibli is well-famous for its fantasy and adventure films that capture the hearts of many anime fans from different generations. They had delivered memorable and epic anime films with great calibers to the world. Every time I asked people about the best anime films, they’re always a Studio Ghibli masterpiece on their list.
Among the top-caliber anime films from Studio Ghibli are the critically acclaimed Spirited Away and the epic Princess Mononoke. Their films are considered by many anime fans to be legendary and always on top among other animated movies. Actually, among my personal favorites are Whisper of the Heart and Howl’s Moving Castle.
In this post, I will share the 5 anime couples from studio Ghibli films that gave us a romantic ride. Aside from fantasy-adventure films, the studio also brought us some of the best and memorable romances in anime history. These love teams came from different ages of human life from the budding love in teenage years up to never too late to fall in love at the thirties, they gave us romance stories that suited people of different ages.
Anime Couples from Studio Ghibli
So, here’s our list of 5 romantic love teams or pairs from any Studio Ghibli film:
Shizuku and Seiji (Whisper of the Hearts)
The Whisper of the Heart is a funny and romantic coming-of-age anime film that revolved around two young individuals, Shizuku and Seiji. They’re quite the typical girl and boy that you can find in high school nowadays, I think the only difference is that these two are such bookworms.
These two were definitely romantic especially when they teased each other, much to the dismay of Shizuku where she always ends up pissed off. But in the end, she fell for Seiji’s charismatic aura and definitely to the boy’s tsundere nature. Seiji eventually reciprocates Shizuku’s feelings and at the end of the film, he even asked her for marriage after they both finish their studies.

Sophie and Howl (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Now, this is a romantic and magical love team with a young lady cursed and turned into an old hag and a young handsome wizard who had an ugly little secret. There’s no doubt that Sophie fell for Howl the very first time they’d met though she didn’t know it was Howl. The fact that Howl can see Sophie’s real appearance even she’s under the spell is quite interesting too.
I think the most romantic part there is that when Sophie breaks her way in, into Howl’s heart and lets him know that there’s someone who will love him regardless of what type of monster he becomes. Sophie and Howl’s story is simply magical in any sense it defies everything that hinders their way.
Taeko and Toshio (Only Yesterday)
This is a rather different story where the girl is actually older than the guy but they are bound with their love for the countryside and the country life. The chemistry between Taeko and Toshio ever since the first time they had met in the train station can’t be denied, they’re perfectly suited for each other.
Taeko’s struggle whether she actually fell for Toshio and her claim of love for the country life is the big challenge on her part. Later on, she finally comes to her senses and realized that her love for the countryside and her feelings for Toshio is real.
Umi and Shun (From Up on Poppy Hill)
This sweet and cheesy tandem between two high school students is simply adorable. Umi and Shun who are both pretty good looking perfectly match each other. The conflict that they might be siblings is the only thing that hinders their relationship but since it was finally cleared and proven that they’re not brother and sister, they really made a pretty good pair. Their chemistry is undeniably strong and their scenes together in the movies especially when Shun doesn’t know anything yet about Umi’s father are really cute.
Sheeta and Pazu (Laputa: Castle in the Sky)
From one of the oldest films from Studio Ghibli, Sheeta and Pazu are the love teams that signify the typical adventure films from the animation studio. Sheeta and Pazu’s feelings for each other simply develop during their journey and run from the pirates and the government organization that is after Sheeta’s necklace. The necklace is a family heirloom that leads the way towards the mythical floating island of Laputa. In their journey, Pazu slowly falls in love with Sheeta and he just badly wants to protect her from those people who are chasing her (just like the typical knight in shining armor).
So, which of these 5 love teams from Studio Ghibli caught your attention? I am pretty sure that aside from these five, there are also other couples that you’re fond of since the animation studio created many films about love, magic, adventure, romance, and a deeper message about the morality of humans.
